{ fiction: year in review 2009 }
Jan. 2nd, 2010 03:37 pmI wrote very, very little this past year, and what I did write was mostly drabbles. But I did get in a couple of crossovers and the like, so whatever. Year in review!

The end. I wrote much less this year because of work and general lack of inspiration, but I'm not disappointed? I don't know. I thought the lower count would bother me, but it doesn't. It's been a success this year just to talk about the things that I enjoy in fandom, so any fic at all becomes an accomplishment.

Dec. 31st, 2009 11:41 amsubtle salvation. (alien series)
Logically, she knows she can't outrun the nightmares. Doesn't mean she can't try.
Ripley/Hicks, post-Aliens, of course. Ripley and Hicks become part of this spoken-word legend and they purge the universe of the threat. But beyond the legend is the story of two messed up, determined people. I love Ripley stories. She's like the ultimate stronghold.

You can find all the Yuletide fics I bookmarked this year at my delicious account.
Yesterday I waited over an hour for takeout. What the hell. But then I came home and watched the penultimate episode of Spooks S7 and got seriously happy. That episode is still unreal to me.
--
Monday through Wednesday I was in Newcastle! I love Newcastle; it's gorgeous. My cousin (P) and I basically hung around town sorting things out for her birthday and the EngSoc netball team (...yeah) and then went out in the evening and had an amazing time. It went so quickly, and I wish I'd stayed a little longer.
But, hey, less than a week until Swansea! Whoop whoop!
--
I STILL haven't seen this week's Mad Men; the plan is to do that today. I did watch Life with The Mother, though. She's been ill all week (and tried to give it to me - how rude!) which freed up some of her time. We watched Farthingale, Serious Control Issues, and Dig a Hole before I had to go to sleep. She watched the finale and was appropriately excited about the whole deal. Just waiting on S2 to come through my door now.
--
Felt wicked deathly last night due to the cold that The Mother tried to give me, or that I picked up from Geordieland. Woke up this morning sans swollen tonsils so I think I'm improving. Don't need this right now.
--
I NEED TO SEE AN EDUCATION. NEED IT LIKE BURNING.
--
Work was pretty boring for the two days I was in, though I got a lot of stuff sorted out, and RE sorted out the shitload of re-assessments that had been sat on my desk for a fortnight due to upper management being unable to take five minutes to okay the letter that we needed to send out. Hopefully Monday-Wednesday next week won't be horrific.
Took the train yesterday and realised that the lift share has spoiled me: I hate that fucking commute so much now. In the morning I had to take the connect because there's no earthly way of getting the direct if you take the bus; in the evening it took me 2.5 hours to get home. UNBELIEVABLE.
--
To conclude: Hallowe'en isn't a thing in the UK, although it's growing. It definitely isn't a thing down my street, though, and I'm not going out. I look forward to using the evening to bake like a tater.

Jan. 2nd, 2009 11:44 amThere's no way that I wrote as much this year as I did last year, but I probably posted more often because of the drabble comms. Plus: I ficbarfed all over Yuletide. (I'm sure you're all grateful for that image.) I don't really know how to organise this? I guess by fandom. I don't really know why I'm thinking this through in-post, but there you have it.

With thanks, as ever, to everyone who left feedback or shook pompoms. Nothing would get written if it wasn't for you.
I don't do resolutions at this time of year; in fact, I make them at any time of year that isn't now because the winter festivities brainwash me into thinking I'm capable of things that I'm not really capable of and I break all my resolutions by February. So. I don't know. That was a fairly pointless way of opening this post.
I will say, though, that I hope expand my flist some and to get back to my regular pattern of posting a handful of times during the day, if only because I sort of miss it, and it stopped me from being piss lazy. True story.

YULETIDE REVEAL!!!! I wrote more for Yuletide in that span of a week or whatever it was than I have all year for anything. RIDICULOUS. My main fics were Strength in Numbers (ensemble, Army Wives) and I Will Dream I Was a Daughter (Ruth, Spooks) for ceridwyn2. I also wrote three pinch-hits/yuletide treats: Half-Life (Spooks) which looks at Ros between seasons 6 and 7; Asynchrony (Spooks) which is about Lucas re-adjusting to England (I suspect I gave myself away with that one; what say you
tigertrapped?); and Lloyd's Still Got Them Polaroids (Life) which is about Tidwell's half-endearing, half-creepy interest in Dani Reese.
Yeah. YEAH.
--
Eventually I will do that fic round up meme though probably not before I do another picspam. Haha. Plus, I sort of want to do "previously, in fandom" posts for all the shows that I stopped talking about a couple of months ago. But to do that I sort of need to catch up with them? Oh dear.
--
GIP! I love this icon, but I still think it would be funnier if the line was I shit thee not.
{ Yuletide Recs. }
Dec. 30th, 2008 03:44 pm/The Ecstasy of Bursting Forth (Mad Men).
A gen fic about Joan, post-S2 finale; written for me and basically hitting all my kinks. Where canon!Joan's strength (paradoxically) lies in her passivity towards Greg, this Joan does the thing we want her to do: she starts to take control of her life. The fic has this great mirroring effect, following her through two mornings and listing the differences. On top of that, there are quiet character notes on Peggy and Salvatore (oh gosh, the latter is heartbreaking) and the atmosphere feels very true to the show. I'm totally in love with it.
( the rest, by fandom (alphabetically) )

Includes: Angels in America; Friday Night Lights; Homicide: Life on the Streets; Life; Mad Men; The Middleman; movies (Aliens; Brick; Chocolat; Empire Records; Hancock; Little Miss Sunshine; Speed); Mythology; Old Testament; One Thousand and One Nights (Arabian Nights); Pushing Daisies; Sarah Connor Chronicles; Slings & Arrows; Spooks; The Time Traveler's Wife; Wire in the Blood
The rest of my Yuletide bookmarks are, natch, at my delicious account.
I'm trying to keep these fairly short because rambling doesn't make for an easy read, and because otherwise I will be here altogether too long. Some quick round-ups for episodes that I don't have much to say about: Bones was really rather FABULOUS and I don't know that I can say much more than that; CSI: NY was also very good, and I don't know about other people, but the Flack storyline is breaking my heart (and also the other thing made me Super Happy because I'm all about Flack-love); and I've yet to watch The Unit but it's a double, so I'll watch them together. Also, Life was very funny, but I confess to not having anything to say about it, and also not having any clue whatsoever about that last Dani and Tidwell scene. No, seriously, I was watching it and I just didn't understand what the fuck was going on.
Okay. Next!

Nov. 3rd, 2008 11:18 pmLet us talk about all the ways in which I didn't understand this episode.
--
edit: I picspammed Life for the latest challenge at picspammy today. My gosh, that pilot continues to be one of the shiniest things.
I also watched the Criminal Minds that was on tonight (girl lost in the mall) and let me take a moment to say a/ TEAM LOVE and b/ Emily was amazing. (This is how she sees herself. Dirty. Disgusting. Oh gosh, oh gosh.)
{ spinning on that dizzy edge. }
Oct. 27th, 2008 01:21 pmI don't remember the order in which I watched these, so I'm going by air date. Likely y'all don't care but it matters to meeee.
Also, I watched a lot of them with The Sister this week which I think changes the way I see things. Mostly because she finds a lot of things funny, and it makes me more sympathetic to the kinds of joke that I would usually stomp all over.
--
re: Numb3rs. I didn't even finish last week's episode (5x03, Blowback), even though the first act looked good. I just. I think I'll wait for it to air on TV some time next year. Maybe time will make me more sympathetic to it? I don't know. It's a bad sign when you can't even watch the scenes with characters you don't actively dislike. And whilst Nikki Betancourt is fierce, I just don't care about her if she's been set up to be the fall guy, instead of a foil to Don & co. which is what she was originally described as being.
Farewell, show. Farewell, Don's Awful Hair.

I still haven't seen this week's Merlin (worked during the repeat on Sunday, and now I'm waiting for The Mother). Speaking of, it took The Mother a year to get into Northern Lights. A YEAR. Then, last week, she picked it up, finished it, finished The Subtle Knife and started The Amber Spyglass which she's quickly making a dent in. I am a little bit eye-roll-y about the whole thing, but also a little bit triumphant. I KNEW she'd like that damn series.
Tonight I have to walk The Sister to a party at a local hotel and then I basically have the night to myself until at least 10pm. HUZZAH HUZZAH!

I have been doing this thing recently where I come into a song all wrong. I mean, I hear it, and the beat doesn't syncopate in my head, so I'm all disoriented for a minute before my brain rearranges the noise and makes sense of it. It's so weird.
I did have real things to update about, but I can't remember a single one of them. So instead: more fandom, huzz.

Today I get to watch Merlin, huzz! And last night I watched more CSI and continued to be bored, which is sadface-inducing.
Dear Mad Men, way to be entirely depressing! Which is not to say that I didn't love it, because, well, OBVIOUSLY I did. Jane is entirely boring to me, though; I think it was the casting choice. It was nice to see Hildy, though, whom I adore. Please, show, continue to wreck me. I don't mind at all.

( True Blood, 1x04, Escape from Dragon House )
( Life, 2x01, Find Your Happy Place )
( Sarah Connor Chronicles, 2x04, Allison from Palmdale )
( Californication, 2x01, Slip of the Tongue )
I've yet to see Dexter; am feeling pretty blahface about it, actually. I may have to store up a few episodes and watch them in one go. Even though I liked it last year, I only watched it on time because I was watching with T. And, well, not there any more.
--
I have new music, eee! Some unreleased Patty Griffin and Seth Lakeman's albums, whoop whoop. Folk at its best. And now: NCIS and Criminal Minds. It is a Good Day.
First set of replies (finally) for the top 5s meme which is still open (hint, hint). melliyna asked me for my top 5 moments from Life. Spoilers below the cut, and images, too. This format was shamelessly NICKED from
razorxrosary.
--
melliyna also asked me for five reasons why Mac and Stella work as a couple. I don't have any old school caps on my laptop right now, or I'd show you scene-by-scene. You'll just have to make do with some icons I made last year, and my being VERBOSE. As per always.

I need to go and buy a train ticket back to Soton today. Aie. There's not a lot else going on right now. My gran is still here, I still have class work to get caught up on. I really need to buy Eugenide's Middlesex, too, so I can give T her copy back. Work, work, procrastination, work.
--
Watched NCIS yesterday - Gretchen Egolf guest starred, aw. I felt so good after I saw the episode. I'm glad it's back, even if we're only getting a handful of new episodes.
Today's perusal of music blogs revealed a track that I actually own but have never listened to properly. To wit: check out Jaymay's Gray or Blue.

So, Vera Farmiga has astonishing eyes. I thought so in The Departed! And now in Touching Evil (US), too. Which did exactly what I thought it would do with the British version. It reminds me of Life? Except. I don't know. Life both takes itself more and less seriously than TE. ODDNESS. (Oh guys. Life needs to come back. RIGHT NOW PLEASE. daygloparker, are you watching this? Because: yes.)

edit: OH MAN. Best in Show is one of the funniest films ever.
( and the pursuant scene, in which Parker Posey loses her shit. )

Blew through my dissertation meeting yesterday (i.e. sped through it), got my Ex.Writ. assignment back, then came home, did some reading, and caught up on some fandom. Life this week was excellent, both times over (will have more to say on that at a later time), and I enjoyed Private Practice. I also watched the final three episodes of Friday Night Lights, season 1. I loved it, the whole thing, especially ( spoiler for finale )
Once I've done some work today, I'm going to move onto season 2.--
Today will be spent taking notes from criticism for the 19thC. poetry essay that I have to write this weekend. I wrote my dissertation plan yesterday, so I'm good to go with writing that (also, supervisor was all, well, you know, it doesn't have to be 4k, which made me feel better). The plan is to write one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Or maybe I'll split the word count and do half of each on each day.
Sometime this weekend I need to do the reading for Monday's 19thC. class, but I think I'm going to have to do it between the lecture and the seminar, otherwise I'm not really going to have the time.

I've lost my library login information. You'd think it would be the same as the university web access log-in, but it's not. It's something else that I apparently haven't used since first year. So, need to email someone about that, and then I can get an interlibrary loan and get the reading materials for the second half of my dissertation. Yayarms.

It's Friday. Next week is the last week of term. MY LAST CHRISTMAS IN SOTON. Aie. That said, I think we're doing the gift-exchange in New Year, although we're having a Christmas night before we leave. I was going to go to Newbury before I went home, but I think I'm going to Surrey now. Hmmm. Thinky.
{ in short. }
Dec. 5th, 2007 08:14 pm(1) Am still failing at academia. Hurrah, hurrah.
(2) As happens every year or so, I have rediscovered Rilo Kiley.
(3) Saving Grace continues to be MAGNIFICENT. Honestly my favourite show.
(4) Life! Ever delightful! (Is it wrong to want Constance/Reese femslash? On top of the other stuff?)
(5) I dreamt I was in hestia8's zombie fic. Ros was awesome. I was not.
(6) Um. I'm totally writing a NCIS/Spooks fic. Assassins ahoy!
(7) And now I have to write a Super Detailed Plan of my dissertation. Sadface.
