{ fiction: year in review 2007. }
Jan. 1st, 2008 03:03 pmLast year I separated these by fandom, but that's going to be a little more difficult this time around, so I'm listing them in order of being posted. One post is the equivalent to one fic. I also wrote poetry this year, but I'm not listing those because they work a little differently.

» my fic archive.
My favourite story this year (of my own): I quite liked Faces I Have Known/There Goes The Neighbourhood (Raines). I like the idea of him trying to keep it together, but I also like the idea that he can use the hallucinations to stave off loneliness. To an extent.
My best story this year: Either In the Sudden Blackness (CSI) or Bodies (in Motion). The former because writing in future tense is hard, and I wasn't sure I was going to do the prompt justice; the latter because it had a real work over with
emmademarais, my beta, who helped me make the prose much, much smoother. Those are the two I think worked the best.
Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Haha, I don't know. I don't really cross-post except for Numb3rs fics so it's not like I'm broadcasting. I think a couple of the drabble sets didn't get any feedback, but I also think that's because I flood post.
Most fun story: Faces I Have Known (Raines) because it's the only one in which I even attempt humour, haha. The one that was the most fun to write, though, was I Am Not a Blind Man (NCIS) because getting to grips with a style that would fit Ziva was both challenging and rewarding. And it meant I got to obsess over her character arc, hurrah. I also really loved the Haikuathons that
trascendenza held this year. Just the whole feel of the community, and the way people were manipulating language - it was a real fest!
Most sexy story: UGH. No such thing. There is sex in Bodies (In Motion). It's not particularly sexy.
Story with single sexiest moment: In the Sudden Blackness - Archie cupping orange slices for Greg to eat from his hand? Yeah, I'm a little bit vain over that moment.
"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: Probably the final fic of the year, Because I Could Not Stop For Death. It's not like I haven't talked about sexual abuse before, but this time I had to talk about it without actually wanting to talk about it, and in some ways I think that almost cheapens what Jo went through in 6x10. That said, I couldn't acknowledge it otherwise, snap, you're back in reality.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Writing AUs for the Numb3rs drabbles was interesting because in some cases I took the characters and inverted them. I don't know: I think any Ziva fic makes me look at her anew because I'm still trying to get to grips with her. There's so much going on with her character, I feel.
Hardest story to write: Here Comes the Sun (Numb3rs). You may or may not have noticed that I have a difficult time maintaining contentment in fiction.
Biggest Disappointment: On the one hand, the two Life fics I wrote because there are parts of those that make NO SENSE. That said, those fics were kink-specific, and I kind of like them for that? I wish I'd done Dani justice in them, though. Maybe in '08. On the other hand, whilst I quite like how Non-Breaking Space (NCIS/Spooks) turned out, I wish I hadn't lost the first draft, because I think it was better.
Biggest Surprise: Writing NCIS fic of any kind.
Most Unintentionally Telling: Haha, probably And Everyone and I Stopped Breathing (original) and A Short History of You (original). I think original fiction says a lot about how I think, and how I write, and how lazy I am with my writing, heh.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted? I never expect to write more than a handful, so definitely more. Admittedly, most of it's been posted in the last fortnight.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007? Greg/Archie (CSI), haha. Also, NCIS.
What's your favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest? Faces I Have Known (Raines). See above.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them? Possibly that CSI fic. I feel I've been far too conventional this year, though. My writing has become more linear, I've been less experimental, and a little more disciplined. But that was sort of the point. I want to go back to more perspective-shifting stuff in '08. I did play around with narrative voices, though, and I think I want to do more of that.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? Same as last year: keep writing. Also, go back to experimentation, and try new fandoms (hopefully Saving Grace, Wire in the Blood and Murphy's Law). If I can get challenge submissions written early, that would also be excellent, but I ain't holding me breath!
With thanks to my betas, and to the people who regularly read and leave feedback. You are all very kindly people, and I appreciate having you all to talk to.
