being human.
+ I truly, truly love the new cast but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes miss the original. Mostly I think the stories from the original cast would have skewed for a slightly older audience and I wouldn't have objected to that even in the slightest.

big love.
+ I actually really enjoy the stories on the compound
+ I wish the marriage with Ana had gone through and been successful
+ the polygamous relationships and the gender politics that come with them don't bother me
+ the religious aspect of the show doesn't bother me
+ I adore Lois Henrickson
+ I find Margene really fucking annoying sometimes. Not always, but more often than not
bones.
+ I LOVE Cam completely and utterly. I loved her even when she first showed up
+ I miss Zack but I don't think the show has lost all that much by losing him because they weren't giving him all that much to do anyway. (This is not to say that I would object to his return because, seriously, YES.)
+ Angela annoys me a lot; her lines can ruin an episode for me. (But I do - mostly - like the Angela/Brennan friendship)

+ I enjoy the Michael/Fiona up&down stuff
+ I wish Fi and Sam liked each other more
+ I don't think the show is brilliant but I do think it's better than most people give it credit

+ I don't miss Elle at all. I never disliked her, but I never got to grips with her as a character, and I don't think the show lost anything when it lost her
+ I rarely gave two shits about Gideon. His absence doesn't faze me in the least.

+ stfu Danny
+ Mac/Stella is my otp but I wouldn't say no to Flack/Stella, which I think is a healthier fit
+ I love Lindsay. I think she's been poorly handled at times but I've always liked her. She's also the only one of them who seems to have a speciality.
+ Mac annoys me more often than not. I wish he didn't but these days, gosh, shut up Mac
+ I love Det. Angell
csi.
+ I can't fucking stand Catherine Willows. I used to like her but from S4+ I just could not give a damn.
+ I think the show's demise started much later than everyone thinks it did

+ I hate David Tennant and I hate Ten.
+ I loved River Song
grey's anatomy.
+ I like Mer/Der as a ship. They suit one another
+ I hated the Denny story almost entirely; I did like the S2 finale but everything else? Annoying.
+ I watch this show for shallow reasons but even those couldn't make amends for all the BS
life.
+ I like Tidwell; I don't mind Dani/Tidwell well enough; I don't think Tidwell is the reason why S2 is a sinking ship
+ Dani's S2 change-of-costume doesn't bother me
+ I used to enjoy Dani's character a lot more than I do now, not because of the direction the show has taken her but because of the fandom which is way too enamoured of its idea of what Dani should be rather than what she actually is
+ I think the show has Too Much Plot and Too Many Contrivances and no Plot Destination
+ I like Charlie's ex-wife; I loved Constance
merlin.
+ for me, Arthur is the least interesting character
+ inexplicably, the slash in this fandom sometimes pisses me off. Not always because I ship, too, but sometimes I get really, really annoyed
+ I love the girls & I think this show is far better at a feminist viewpoint than others
+ the show is by no stretch brilliant but it's much better than Robin Hood
my own worst enemy.
+ this show was far better than people gave it credit and I really wish it hadn't been cancelled. I say this despite my love of Saffron Burrows; I think it was truly compelling and should have been allowed to close off its narrative arc in the least
ncis.
+ I love Jethro but I wish they'd ease back on all the edits to his backstory
+ Tony is interesting to me only when he's being a not-for-laughs, deliberate asshole
+ I miss Jenny Shepard and Paula Cassidy, and also Faith Coleman
+ I love Abby but I loved her more in S1
+ speaking of, Jethro/Abby does nothing for me
+ this show doesn't have a great track with female characters and that disappoints me
+ I think Ziva is one of the most interesting female characters on TV right now. I wish they'd bring up Ari in front of her more often & actually deal with some more of those stories head on
+ give me some more Tim background, please
+ Jethro/Ducky shippers piss me the fuck off, not because I have any objection to the ship but because as a community of fans they are incredibly close-minded and not at all welcoming
+ I am a NCIS apologist because I can (and do) overlook a lot of stuff in favour of just enjoying what I see. This doesn't mean that the things I choose to overlook don't frustrate me

+ I have never ever liked Charlie Eppes. Not even for a second.

+ Addison is not the be-all and end-all that people portray her to be

+ Chuck is really annoying & I often dislike the way she treats Ned's inability to interact with the world. I love them, I do, but please

+ I hated Adam Carter for a very, very long time and I don't ship Adam/Ros
+ I loved Fiona Carter but she, much like Adam, turned out to be an empty promise
+ Ros is the Fiona Carter I was expecting; I love her & have done from the very first time she showed up on screen
+ I miss the early seasons of the show but I also like the show perfectly fine as it is
+ I miss Ruth but definitely not as much as the rest of the fandom
+ the show's dealings with race and gender really, really annoy me

Agreed.

Very much agreed.

YES. They basically dropped the whole Ari thing, which really annoys me. There's so much possibility there. I wish we could see some of it explored onscreen and not in fanfic.

you mean by the fact that there's an overwhelming amount of it, the quality of some fics, recurring themes, or what?
+ I love the girls & I think this show is far better at a feminist viewpoint than others
i'm completely with you on that. in fact, i'm surprised it'd be considered an unpopular opinion. at least around my flist, gwen and morgana get a lot of love.
+ the show is by no stretch brilliant but it's much better than Robin Hood
heh. well, yes.
also amen to everything you said re SCC, with the possible exception of john, who's had some interesting angles here and there. then again, he's being way too emo and boring lately.

Date: 2009-03-04 07:36 pm (UTC)re: slash, it's a reaction I have with slash-OTP-heavy fandoms sometimes. I ship everyone on that show, Merlin/Arthur is no exception (they're so adorable on screen, y/y?) but I get frustrated by the lack of variation. I understand why it's like that, and I'm not surprised by the trend - I expected it, actually - but it still bugs me sometimes. Short instances where I get very angry about it.
i'm surprised it'd be considered an unpopular opinion. at least around my flist, gwen and morgana get a lot of love.
I was reading some crit somewhere about how anti-feminist the show is and whilst I could see how the author was making those points I didn't agree with them in the least. I think the show does a great job with the girls, but I saw a wall of disagreement.
I find the emo!John annoying and unfortunately I feel like we see more of that John than the one who is making the hard decisions etc. I think the Riley plot was a mistake, or at least could be better handled.
no subject
Date: 2009-03-04 05:34 pm (UTC)Yeah, I also read some strange opinions by these shippers (but generally this is somehow the only ship I don't enjoy at all, which is strange because with NCIS I'm far more open-minded about ships than with every other Fandom and I read basically everybody/everybody except Gibbs/Ducky)
Also word on Ziva being one of the most amazing femal characters ever.
On the one hand I also don't miss Elle very much, mainly because Emily is simply great and Elle simply left to soon to become really interesting but I quite enjoyed her relationship with Morgan, sometimes it reminded me of a (very light version) of Tony/Ziva. The show soon focused on Morgan/Garcia but he has some nice scenes with Elle especially in the beginning Fisher King.
For Gideon it's somehow difficult for me, I liked him a lot when I started watching in the middle of the second season but when I rewatched everything I soon was like 'Oh my God. He's creepy. Why didn't I notice that before?' (well and then came Rossi, and I totally fell in love with this character...)

Date: 2009-03-04 06:22 pm (UTC)In Spooks, I find my capacity for rewatching Ros pales over time. I dislike Harry quite a lot, quite often. I too wish Spy!Gran was coming back. I would rather watch a spinoff with the older generation than the frankly risible Code 9 bunch of wet smacks.
Being Human: agree, 100%. This show has quite possibly one of the best managed character dynamics of all time. Each of the three is enriched and exposed by their relationship(s) to the other(s).

Date: 2009-03-04 07:42 pm (UTC)re:Ros, I can understand that (your comment about the kinds of female characters we don't get any more & how they have to be cool as steel and lacking in femininity - I agreed with that so strongly); I don't feel it so strongly with Ros, but with other female characters, yes. I wish there was a Spooks backstory spinoff. I'd love that.

I agree with you on almost everything, especially about Riley. She's a total meaningless character to have on the show and John has been a whining baby since the beginning of S2, at least in my opinion. I watch the show because of Sarah and especially Cameron.

I agree. I'm not sure how much I agree with the second point (healthier fit), perhaps I'm just blinded by the fact that Mac/Stella are my ultimate OTP of all time.
I'm starting to hate the show. I'm not sure if hate is the right word, but they're all driving me nuts, the writing isn't as strong, it all seems so much more staged and contrived and nothing yells "this is a beautiful, fun, clever NEW YORK CITY show and it will steal your soul and hold it captive in a cute little blue-tinted box" anymore.
no subject
Date: 2009-03-04 08:45 pm (UTC)I'm much more aware of how formulaic it is than I used to be. I don't hate it - I'm quite fond of certain aspects - but there is a sense of ennui to it which is distressing to say the least.

Date: 2009-03-04 08:12 pm (UTC)Um, YES. I am immensely glad I am not the only person who feels this way. It always baffles me when people commend the show for its depiction of these things.
+ I miss Ruth but definitely not as much as the rest of the fandom
+ the show's dealings with race and gender really, really annoy me
I'd rather have Danny back than Tom (were such a thing to happen)
Yes, all of these things. If Ruth never comes back, that's fine -- I just wish they would find her a suitable replacement who doesn't get killed/turn out to be evil. And I wish we could have Danny back. I know it was David Oyelowo's decision to have him killed, buuut I sometimes wish the writers had overruled him, just injured Danny, and Danny had quit out of disillusionment.
+ I don't see the appeal re: Eric. I have since discovered the appeal of Skarsgard, but still, not Eric
+ stfu, Sam the Shapeshifting Doggie Man

AAAH this makes me so happy! This is exactly the way I feel. I think a lot of people like Eric due to the books, but not having read beyond the first one (which I didn't find all that enjoyable compared to the tv series) his appeal still eludes me. I also don't understand the animosity for Sookie/Bill. I think they're precious.
+ I actually totally enjoyed the last two seasons. No lie. They weren't as good as the earlier seasons but they weren't as shit as people make them out to be.
Ha, I think you know I disagree, but I will say this in favour of S8 -- I think the casefiles are better than they were in S6-7. I am capable of positivity. \o/

THANK YOU. The thing I hated about Gideon, if you'll allow me to get up on my soapbox, was that he was so volatile and prickly. I just never felt like I could empathise for or sympathise with him, because he was always a bit of a jackass.
inexplicably, the slash in this fandom sometimes pisses me off.
This drives me mad about Merlin fandom: I tell someone I'm writing, say, Lancelot/Merlin or Merlin/Morgana, and the person acts like I personally walked into the universe of the show and broke up Arthur and Merlin's non-existent relationship. I don't mind people having their preferences, and I honestly don't mind if they don't want to read my stupid fics that aren't Arthur/Merlin, but I hate when people act like I'm doing something heinous because "OMG THEY'RE OTP". It kind of offends my personal idea that nobody is entirely monogamous. I love the idea that Arthur and Merlin are two sides of the same coin, but I can't imagine either of them staying virgin pure for each other, either before or after they've consummated their epic love.
no subject
Date: 2009-03-04 09:13 pm (UTC)I do, too, which disappointed* me a little. I saw the finale, and I loved it, and I loved the way the beginning and the end paralleled each other - with George stepping up. (Oh gosh, NINA. HOLD ME.) Speaking of Annie & George's arc: did you notice how when Annie is protesting in the finale, she sounds and emotes just like George. The language and the body language struck me very strongly there and made me gleeful.
Haha, you're going to read my answer to your question and probably be all, oh, of ~course~: Annie. The reason is that I was really intrigued by that epic sense of devotion that she displayed towards Owen and how that (to me) seemed like this massive blank of denial that would eventually erupt into something potentially dangerous. Which: it did and it didn't. Fuck me, I loved it when she stormed the undertakers' to get the vamps' food stock.
Whilst I'm here: the scene where Josie gives herself, so to speak, to Mitchell broke my heart and I have to say, considering she was only there for two-ish episodes (less, even!) that relationship was so interesting to me, oh my.
*) this is far too strong a word - because I LOVE George, and his story IS [very] compelling to me - but I can't find an alternative. What I mean is, when I came to the show, I wasn't so invested in his story, and actually, I do wish the finale had been a bit more even handed with the characters. I'm explaining this very badly because it implies a strength of opinion that I don't have. I really did love the show and the finale, and George. It's much like how I love the line-up as it turned out but sometimes I have nostalgia for the series we didn't get. Does that make sense?
he was so volatile and prickly
On the one hand, Mandy Patinkin played that character (& his PTSD) so well; on the other hand, I didn't like the character that he played. I don't know if that's a strength or not, ha.
but I hate when people act like I'm doing something heinous because "OMG THEY'RE OTP"
Oh my: you just verbalised my exact position on this. I mean. I'm behind the ship but sometimes it just throws me because I ship just about everyone and whilst I'm aware that people are all very well entitled to their OTPs I just wish slash OTPs weren't so violently one-sided. By that I mean: I find that those OTPers try to impose their viewpoint on me whereas I'm all, sure, it's YOUR OTP but that doesn't mean it has to be MINE. YOU KNOW? Gosh. Anger! ...I'm going to go over there now and take a few breaths.

Date: 2009-03-04 09:52 pm (UTC)- I have also loved Cam ever since the start. Mostly because she pissed off the mad shippers at first, which I always approve of. But she's become really cool on her own since, too.
- I didn't like Ten until Donna arrived and slapped him around a bit and told him when he was being an idiot. Now, I can't seem to stop love him in all his annoying, emo glory.
- I ship everyone in GA, even Meredith/Derek. Mostly because I think they kind of deserve each other.
- I may be the only person alive who doesn't like Merlin/Arthur!

Date: 2009-03-05 10:07 am (UTC)Lols, I am a shipper, but she didn't seem a threat to me at all especially considering that Bones and Booth were still in separate romantic spheres.
Aw. You're probably not the ONLY person who doesn't ship Merlin/Arthur, but I wonder at the size of the minority in the fandom. That said, I ship everyone, so. I guess I'm just a whore.

Date: 2009-03-04 10:46 pm (UTC)Because I'd sign your opinions on BSG, Bones, CSI, Numb3rs and X-Files any time. Most of the NCIS ones too, except that I always like Tony and, for lack of better options, also read Gibbs/Abby. Not that Gibbs/Abby has been a better option so far.
The state of NCIS fanfic is just too sad.
*sigh*
no subject
Date: 2009-03-05 10:12 am (UTC)Oh, I've read Gibbs/Abby, but it doesn't do anything for me, and I don't see it on screen. I mean, I see their intimacy, but I attribute it to something other than romance. I'm all for age-variant relationships but I think their connection is different to that.
I like Tony, I get frustrated by him (but I think that's good characterisation) but I have so little to say about him most of the time. But then, his anger/guilt in the S5 finale and then in the S6 two-parter (Cloak/Dagger) - suddenly he was more intriguing.

Me too! I actually really liked Doggett (mostly I liked him. I can remember yelling at my tv every time he was skeptical about something because, dude, he died and then was puked back to life! He had no right to be skeptical about anything after that!) and Reyes. I think, for me anyway, it helped that due to a weird set up with our satellite I never saw it from the beginning in a linear pattern until the last 3 seasons. I wasn't as attached to the Mulder/Scully dynamic as a lot of fans.

Date: 2009-03-05 10:16 am (UTC)Perhaps this makes me a bad feminist but, hell, it's not like she did it to impress a man.
Haha, yes. I just don't think it's as big a deal as people make it out to be. I think she turned a corner on her self-loathing and started to process and her behaviour and carriage mirrors that. So. Whatever.
Ah, see, I do miss him, but I also don't think the show is the worse off without him. I like the many grad students. Actually, I like the way Cam interacts with each of them. Is that weird? Whatev.

Thank you! The show has lost the ability for me to care for the characters as strongly as it did originally. Sam's choices don't make sense and Jared's inability to act is making me roll my eyes at every scene he's in. And the angel arc had so much potential; now it's plodding along with the writers pretending to know what they are doing.

That was moving so swiftly and precisely at the top of the season and now it's languishing. I understand the need for meat-of-the-week episodes but what originally looked like it had direction has now pattered out.

I do kind of miss the original (more Andrea Riseborough than the guy) but the only way they’d skew to an older audience if it wasn’t on BBC 3, because the people in charge of BBC 3 are obsessed with their 16-24 demographic.

I kind of like Tidwell (and I loved it when Dani cut his hair, because fuck me, it was getting on my nerves)
+ Dani's S2 change-of-costume doesn't bother me
Proving that it doesn’t bother me: change of costume?
+ I used to enjoy Dani's character a lot more than I do now, not because of the direction the show has taken her but because of the fandom which is way too enamoured of its idea of what Dani should be rather than what she actually is
I clearly need to watch s2 again because I have forgotten most of it, apparently.
+ I think the show has Too Much Plot and Too Many Contrivances and no Plot Destination
Fair comment
merlin.
+ for me, Arthur is the least interesting character
TOTALLY.
+ inexplicably, the slash in this fandom sometimes pisses me off. Not always because I ship, too, but sometimes I get really, really annoyed
Nope, fair enough. I want to read more Gwen/Morgana but it necer gets recced (and you know what I am like about remembering to join comms etc)
+ I love the girls & I think this show is far better at a feminist viewpoint than others
Me too!
+ the show is by no stretch brilliant but it's much better than Robin Hood
I don’t think this counts as an unpopular opinion ;) I think you’ll be hard-pressed to find people who disagree.
ncis.
+ I love Jethro but I wish they'd ease back on all the edits to his backstory
I’m beginning to think he’s their Gary Stu; I hate it when writers do that.
+ Tony is interesting to me only when he's being a not-for-laughs, deliberate asshole
I wish they’d make up their minds with what they want Tony to be.
+ this show doesn't have a great track with female characters and that disappoints me
SO disappointing, isn’t it
+ I think Ziva is one of the most interesting female characters on TV right now. I wish they'd bring up Ari in front of her more often & actually deal with some more of those stories head on
I think Ziva’s ace
+ give me some more Tim background, please
PLSPLSPLSPLSPLSPLSPLS!
+ Jethro/Ducky shippers piss me the fuck off, not because I have any objection to the ship but because as a community of fans they are incredibly close-minded and not at all welcoming
I just don’t get it. However I also don’t get Tony/Gibbs, so there goes 90% of the fic.
+ I am a NCIS apologist because I can (and do) overlook a lot of stuff in favour of just enjoying what I see. This doesn't mean that the things I choose to overlook don't frustrate me
If you didn’t overlook the issues, you’d never watch the show. It’s why I have it as an ironing show/exercising show rather than a ‘watch closely’ show.

Date: 2009-03-05 12:53 pm (UTC)sarah connor chronicles.
+ I've really been enjoying all the Sarah-centric stuff recently
I love Sarah.
+ John Connor doesn't interest me; on that note, stfu, Riley
I have only seen one episode with Riley – I think I skipped one somewhere – but yes, John Connor is boring. Which I think is kind of the point.
+ this show also suffers from Too Much Plot/Lack of Plot Destination...
How can it when the future can be changed? Gives me a headache.
+ ...but I think it draws characters very, very, very well and I think it deserves a third season
OH YES PLS.
spooks.
+ I hated Adam Carter for a very, very long time and I don't ship Adam/Ros
Totally. And who the hell does ship Adam/Ros? I don’t even believe Ros did.
+ I loved Fiona Carter but she, much like Adam, turned out to be an empty promise
I blame this on Adam. I blame everything on Adam.
+ Ros is the Fiona Carter I was expecting; I love her & have done from the very first time she showed up on screen
I was rereading my s5 recaps, and Ros makes so much more sense in retrospect (well, excepting the crazy that was 501/2). You should feel proud for being ahead of the curve! Although I still feel that Ros telling Mace on Ruth in 505 (or however it went down) was weak writing.
+ I miss the early seasons of the show but I also like the show perfectly fine as it is
Most of the things I would change are tiny (show is set in London; everyone knows this, stop telling us) but I like it pretty much as it is. I miss the personal moments, though (see race meta). I think it lost its way in s6, but crucially, I think they realised this and worked out how to fix it.
+ I miss Ruth but definitely not as much as the rest of the fandom
I miss Ruth but also Ruth’s job – she’s a symbol of the whole ‘everyone does everything’ thing that really hit with a vengeance in s5/6.
+ the show's dealings with race and gender really, really annoy me
I am still writing this (well, just race for now, gender can wait as it’s much less straightforward) – I was thinking about it this morning, have some things to focus on.
+ I thought 6x07 was hilarious and loved it a lot
And that would be… (oh, crap, I used to be so good at these) Oh, the TV one. I thought that was 608 (oh no, obv not, that was the one where Ros left). I thought it was hilarious because nobody told Adam Ana was still alive. Fuck you, you unpleasant egotistical moron.
…Yep, still bitter.
+ I wish SpyGran was coming back
Me too! I’d possibly even forgive them the terrible retcon.
+ I'd rather have Danny back than Tom (were such a thing to happen)
That would be impressive and also quite creepy. And it would mean that my continual guesses of ‘and this week on Spooks, zombies!’ would finally be right.
the middleman.
+ I love Middleman/Wendy but I don't disagree with: Middleman/Lacey; Wendy/Lacey; Wendy/Noser
/that said, I sometimes want to stab Lacey in the face. So. ~Conflicted~
I kind of think this is my no-shipping show, but then I am only 3 episodes in.

+ I think the show's demise started much later than everyone thinks it did
Because the show's demise started when they STOPPED ACTUALLY TRYING TO GET THE SCIENCE RIGHT! Which I believe was about episode 2. However, it didn't start to piss me off until about S7. Or that's when I stopped at least. Cept for Warrick dying. That I enjoyed. ;p
+ I've really been enjoying all the Sarah-centric stuff recently
ME TOO! It's the SARAH Connor Chronicles, and it's interesting stuff, and also the whole point of the show.
+ I miss Jenny Shepard and Paula Cassidy, and also Faith Coleman
Me too. I think I would cry if they killed off Ziva though.

OH GOSH. I can't even THINK about that as a possibility.
