My favourite story this year (of my own): and she dances (firefly/doctor who). Because it came out just right.
My best story this year: ophelia’s flowers (original) was a mammoth task, but the endgame was practically nil. I think that stylistically snap your fingers & fold your hand (spooks) was probably the best, because although it’s a style that I’ve used before, I think this is probably the most successful instance of it. I fall in and out of love with this fic. I also think that exodus (numb3rs) reads a lot better than it probably should.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: in the wake (stargate: atlantis). There was going to be a rant against anti-Carson people here, but whatever. I blame the writers. That said, this fic isn’t really even a Carson fic. It’s actually just gen! And fandom didn’t care, so. Oh well.
Also: two blushing pilgrims (numb3rs). I personally really like this one? I don’t know if people didn’t like how oblique it was, or of they really, really don’t like Megan-fic, or if it was actually just crap, but I got basically zero voice on this.
Most fun story: To write? and she dances. In general? I don’t really write fun stories. There’s a couple of the drabbles in notes from a picture book (numb3rs) that were fun – Larry dressed as an elf, for example. Or the cast discussing having The Talk with their parents.
Most sexy story: I never know what this means. Surprisingly, a lot of them have sex in them. I guess out of all of them, kiss (csi: new york/miami; drabble) is the sexiest, in that brutal, pretty-wrong fashion.
Story with single sexiest moment: Um? I don’t know. This year this is unexpectedly difficult. I suppose this is a case of the sex being systematic, so, whatever. It’s probably hiding somewhere in notes from a picture book, although there’s the reveal scene in part iv of ophelia’s flowers, with the dancing. Actually, yeah. The reveal scene.
"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: This year it has to be every story in which Megan cheats on Larry. Because who knew that I was such a sceptic over romance?
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: exodus. Half way through that, I suddenly couldn’t stop pairing Colby and Megan together at every available opportunity.
Hardest story to write: in the wake was really hard to get started; no more roads (numb3rs) was difficult because I suck at porn, and because I used a style that was basically impossible to maintain. I’m curious as to how people are going to take to it. (I get the feeling a lot of people will skip it because it’s Megan fic and, well, the fandom is all about the boys, unfortunately.)
Biggest Disappointment: breathe shallow (numb3rs) was a load of bollocks. And no matter how many times I re-read ophelia’s flowers, I can never be as pleased with it as I was when I was writing it. Sigh.
Biggest Surprise: the city and the sea (stargate: atlantis), without a doubt, although shutter speed (supernatural) surprised me by its very existence.
Most Unintentionally Telling: Probably ophelia’s flowers. There are little things all over that fic which mirror me completely and they scare me batshit, lol.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted? More. More, more, more. I am always surprised when it turns out that I’ve finished fic.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2006? Ha! Elizabeth/Teyla, period.
What's your favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest? This question is so hard because I go through love/hate phases with everything I write. Oh! take little steps. (csi: new york) always makes the happy list. This is because I love Sheldon Hawkes, of course.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them? Risks? Not that I can think of. I pretty much middle-grounded it this year, although I think every time I write, I’m taking a risk, mostly because I don’t know how to write and there’s always the chance that no-one will understand what I’ve written. I guess notes from a picture book was a risk, because setting yourself deadlines and word counts can be restrictive but that one paid off. What I learned was to be succinct. That’s a goal: succinct imagery.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? Write more. Write more, write more often. Try to write real prose the way most people do, instead of fucking around with style all the damn time. Finish the
20_20challenge fics. Write in more fandoms. Re-write ophelia’s flowers. Finish and post negative space. Actually get mother’s day written. And other stuff *g*
Special thanks go to
wliberation and
tigertrapped who are not only my unfailing betas, but my dear friends. The former is my enabler and hand-holder, the latter is my inspiration. Further thanks to
binglexjells who not only writes brilliantly, but was the entire reason that any csi: new york fic got written this year. Also on this list of Awesome must go
ivinnuna and
raeyashi for their constant and uplifting feedback, and more lately,
twincy who has bravely beta'd my last fic for the year, and indulged me so far as to geek-meta Shakespeare and Bones (no, seriously). Lastly, I want to thank not only everyone who has read my fic this year, but everyone for whom I've beta'd this year. This whole fanfic thing is a two-way street. You can write all you want, but it's the talking that counts. So thanks for talking.
