The following contains spoilers for CSI:Miami, 3x01, Lost Son. I'll cut it if anyone cares but I seriously think we're the last to have seen it.

So, I found out about this particular plotline one year ago when Cochrane decided enough was a enough. It was just after the CSI firings/re-hirings and was just too much for this fangirl to take. Since then, I've waited a year and been completely fucking spoiled for it since last September. So, as far as having been in denial...well, I haven't really. The actual death was mildly shocking (gunshots and ricochets do me in because I'm addle-minded) but other than that? I feel like I've been mourning this character since he was conceived.

Miami has lost more actors than any of the other CSI shows: Megan (♥), Speed (♥♥♥) and, soon, (Y)elena. I wonder if that anything to do with Caruso? no, I'm not being bitchy, I genuinely wonder if that's the case. I know Cochrane wanted a chance to get out of the monotony of doing TV - I've heard the same reactions from Gary Sinise (who decided it was safer to do something boring and dependable than quit it all for film) and Thandiwe Newton (who found ER interesting enough but got bored with the format after a while). I have to say, having seen some of Cochrane's earlier work, the stuff he's given in Miami is pretty weak. But then, I didn't fall for Cochrane himself; I fell for the character.

It's no secret that I'll favour the smart over the sexy (mostly because I think that smart can be sexy but sexy isn't necessarily smart, you know?) and when you first meet Tim Speedle, the guy's...well, that guy's a twat, actually. In the CSI/Miami x-over, Tim Speedle is annoying as hell. He's very...bouncy. The only person I liked when I saw Cross Jurisdictions was Alexx Wood. Tbh, she's the only one I like anymore which is why I'm leaving this one to rot.

But then...then you come to Golden Parachute and Speed is completely different. He's intelligent, a little moddy, he's stuck between Megan and Horatio. He's not oblivious like Calleigh, he's not insensitive like Eric. In those first few episodes, he's a little rocky as the writers try to figure the character out but he's still so bright, something I have forever loved in him. Speed was the brains of the outift; the actual geek. Not just that, the CSI life wasn't his life; it was just a job, something he had to do. He was objective, diligent. None of this bs backstory crap that they spent pouring out on Eric and HoCaine (and to a certain extent, Calleigh). Speed was just there.

And Speed was funny: sharp, acerbic. Not comedy!Calleigh funny; I mean actually funny. ("What am I going to do for three hours [w/o my phone]?" "You could stop talking"). All my contentions with the character are due to HoCaine and the writers, actually. The way Tim acted towards him, how the boss treated him back; the way the character became less of a centre-piece as the series went on, becoming boring and solid. Amusingly, he was still the highlight of every week.

So, Lost Son. First off, HoCaine, did someone glue your palms to your hips? Because that would amuse me. Why do you need to survey the scene in that way? Secondly, who the hell wrote this dren? Was it the same person who wrote Dispo Day? Dispo Day is fun to watch but so not in character. Why would Speedle - one of the most conscientious characters in the series - use someone else's kit? Why would he not clean his gun? Why didn't we see his brother at the funeral? Why was the funeral in Miami if all his family is in Syracuse (I'll let that last one slip because he did runaway to Miami)? How the hell did he get mores line in this epiosde than he did on average per episode in S2? Why the hell did the writers put in that "well, plenty of time for that now," line just before he entered the jewellers? Why the hell didn't he call for HoCaine to get his gun out? Why did no one (but for Alexx, of course) shed a single tear? What was up with Calleigh's face all the way through this? Why didn't we get to see Eric's response to Speed's death? Why was there random shooting?! OMIGOD WHAT DREN. I was annoyed by this so bloody much. Just...argh!

I'll be back to watch the finale, maybe, but I'm so done with this fandom. The H/C hug was cute but then HoCaine started talking and I got mad again. The end picture was very sweet but I was still fuming over where the hell his brother was to care too much. To think, I was only watching for RC's scenes; there's so little decent H/C fic out there, too (I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] natushka will point me in the right direction if any more transpires - until then, I'll stick to Mac/Stella, ta). I don't like the characters, I don't like the HoCaineego-centric storylines, I don't like the inconsistencies, the writing or the direction (what the hell is up with that stupid camera jerky thing that they keep using? And why are they using it? It's not realistic, it's poor filming).

So. That's that, then.

I think Miami fans shoul stick to watching the first 8-10 episodes of the series and live there in denial forever. Seriously.

And damn straight! You are my H/C queen :)
