HAHAHA. I am so LAME. So, there happens to be, in fandom, a person who goes by the name deadlikemedaisy; I always used to get her mixed up with call_me_daisy. I ONLY JUST REALISED WHAT HER USERNAME IS ABOUT. Hot damn, but I'm a moron.

Today will be another correspondence filled day, yo. So many comments! Will get to that in a minute. Today is also A-level results, so good luck to whomever that applies to, and... I probably need to make some phonecalls, don't I?

--

Speaking of phonecalls, there is a girl in our group of friends with whom I fell out a number of years ago. Nothing overly dramatic, we just decided we weren't entirely mutually compatible and thus stopped talking. [livejournal.com profile] xanitia and I bumped into her and her husband (another friend of ours; he's a good guy) the other day and I felt extremely awkward. Anyway, she's especially friendly with The Fairy who is leaving for France in September (for a year) and is organising a leaving/birthday do for her. And she called last night and I was considerably freaked out. It would have been a better conversation if The Baby and The Sister weren't making loads of noise but they were, and I couldn't quite hear the girl, so I ended up babbling like the moron that I am.

Naturally, now that [livejournal.com profile] xanitia has no more days in D., the sun comes out to play.

Am reading a flister's dissertation and it is made of brilliance (no, really; it's both eloquent and interesting). It's also scaring the crap out of me, so I have to keep reminding myself that she's an MA student, and I'm only a BA student. Phew. Seriously, though, I really need to crack on with making notes for my text, I think. I don't want to get caught up in the noise that is the first semester, and reading week half-through will be needed for mid-term essays.

Man, whatever happened to The Calling? I loved their music when I was in y11. I'd come home at 4pm and the DJ would play them, without fail, at 5pm. Them, and Pink's second album, too. GOOD TIMES, GOOD TIMES.

I swear, I'm not really obsessed, but [livejournal.com profile] hestia8 sent me this FABULOUS link tearing apart that video I was talking about yesterday and I realised something HILARIOUS. !!!

THIS POSE? WHERE HE LOCKS HIS SHOULDER? Oh man. That is the EXACT same thing I do when I try to close the upper cupboard in the kitchen without using my hand. EXACT SAME THING. LOLZ. Except I am considerably less camp about the whole ordeal (if I turned my head like that, I'd probably get smacked by said cupboard door) and there's no water on the floor. Nor are there shiny bodies bouncing around. SIGH.

First off, I can't seem to get around to the latest episode of Saving Grace. I'm fairly certain it aired when it was supposed to, so what's up with that?

So, The Wire. Let me preface this by re-establishing that I love crime and procedural dramas. They are like comfort food to me. I like their rhythm and their odd turns of spontaneity. I like the insta-punch they pack, and I like the spread of sweeps-to-non-sweeps episodes. It's all gravy, as people other than myself are prone to saying. But.

But.

I also love well-scripted, well-paced dramas. There's a reason I don't watch soaps - the scripts don't pack the right punch. There's a reason why I drop as many procedurals as I pick up new ones. After a while, they lose their spark. Seven years of CSI is about following old comforts, not about discovering something new. So when you want something new, you turn to miniseries (aka: BBC) or HBO.

This summer has been wonderful for me on that front because whilst finding time to indulge in Medium and discard Heroes, I have devoured all of Deadwood, re-watched Carnivàle, been following the second season of Big Love and tucked into the first season of Oz. Now I'm eating my way through The Wire.

The Wire.

At first glance it looks like it should be a bog standard cop show, but it isn't. It's a drama looking at two things: a case that falls into the life of the city, and the people involved in that case. The ride is slow before picking up ground mid-season. The script takes its time, and can afford to because the writing is clean, sharp. There is nothing scrappy about this show, and it may be a slow burn but the pay off is big. Strong characterisation, deep storylines and a lo-fi approach to a high-tech show that gives you a lived-in, real life feel to the proceedings.

It's cops against collars, with an array of characters, all of whom you feel for in one way or another. The earlier episodes are lighter, but as the case gets more serious, so does the scenary. I'm going to try and go through it episode by episode (I was trying to do that as I watched it but it was too good to keep stopping and starting) and sum up the main plot, and the main characters.

It's a big deal in a big city, and The Wire bites hard. Definitely one to watch.
