More on Spooks. Talky-talky.

So, I've had time to calm down since yesterday and I'm still in love with the episode. I really enjoyed it, and I was caught up in it, and I'm certain that's because I love the entire cast as opposed to any real idea about overall quality. Because, well. Things didn't make sense.
Like Connie. I know the whole point of a really good mole is that they don't get caught, so you can say, well, she nearly managed it and then things got heated up when Harry brought her back on the grid. But I get the sense that Connie was made the mole because the show didn't know what to do with her. Like I said last night, I'm upset it was Connie because apparently no female agents stay the course in the Secret Service, and I'm upset in a way because I have adored her from the start. But on the other hand, I really quite like that it was her? I mean, I'm not all CHARACTER ASSASSINATION! and FUCK U KUDOS about the situation. I'm not annoyed about the decision. It's a plot choice, and I can go with that quite happily. I'm sure that some people somewhere will be enraged about it, but whatever.
You know who else gets the short end of the stick in this show? Young coloured males. That's three for three on the death count. I think more male (primary) characters have been killed than female (Danny, Colin, Zaf, Adam, Ben vs. Helen, Fiona), but more female characters have departed than male. I feel sore for Ben because since Lucas' arrival he was so much more competent and promising than when he joined Section D. But also, I feel like he was killed off in a shock tactic way? Like, his death had emotional resonance because he was one of the team, but he was the 'least valuable' (so to speak) so you could kill him off, have the emotional fallout, but none of the greater repercussions? And I get really mad at a lot of shows for doing that, but I don't know. I'm not angry at this episode. I wish Ben hadn't died. But that scene where Connie kills him - I thought that was amazing. Okay, no tea. You're very young. Too young to be wasting your life with this nonsense. The first part signalled to me that she was going to use poison as an option; like she had some sympathy. And then she just loses her shit completely. That was cold. And Ben is doing everything right at that moment - staying calm, not showing his hand, putting together information by himself even before Lucas calls him. (Here's a question: when are we going to get a coloured female agent? Hmm?)
Harry's Renaissance whatever was a little Deus ex machina for me, but again, no real qualms with that. I actually thought that maybe he was quoting Ros' words back to her, but no. And way to prioritise, Harry: back in a suit at the first sign of freedom.
So, I guess what I'm really trying to get at here is that I'm a big fat hypocrit because this episode featured two things that would usually have me in a mood and made me sort of love them? Because however RIDICULOUS Spygran's molehood seems to me, I also kind of love it? When she hissed at Harry I applauded. Her rhetoric was all bullshit and so hollow at that point (and that dialogue was terrible mostly because they obviously had no reason for making her the Russian insider) but the hissing was marvellous.
But shit, Ben. All death and no fanfare.

Other minor things: seeing Lucas with Maria K, however short that scene was, was brilliance. I could have done without all the cuts to the pole dancers during the murder scene, but whatever. I enjoyed all the spasiba-ing that was being flung around. I also really liked the moment when Ros works out Harry's message and then colludes with Malcolm. I am suddenly completely in love with the two of them working together.
Harry's torture scenes were pretty crikey-inducing. (Afterwards I watched Jack Malone get shot with a nail gun or something, and then watched Brenda Leigh Johnson deal with a serial killer who tortures women with a cattle prod so my night was fairly uniform in theme.) I'm almost disappointed that he's still around because now the whole set up feels sort of cheap. On the other hand: I might have died if he'd gone, so I take that back x100.

I remember reading that David Oyelowo requested that Danny be killed off -- apparently they were just going to injure him? -- but I do wish they'd stop with the killing. I think Zaf had an even worse sendoff than Ben, honestly. By the time we found out what really happened to Zaf I didn't really care (which was less due to Zaf and more due to my meh-ness on S6) but Ben's death made me teary. I'm also shocked they just did away with two team members in one go. Maybe they'll bring Ruth back now! A girl can hope.

Date: 2008-11-25 05:53 pm (UTC)Also, we never get more than one coloured male on the grid at a time, and we've never actually had a coloured female.
I did have part of a meta somewhere that basically ended with 'now, if we could just stop with the one-in-one-out ratio for coloured people, the show would be pretty much perfect'.
I can't believe Spooks has gone for a lap dancing scene. I'm so disappointed.

Date: 2008-11-30 11:24 pm (UTC)oh god the ink *alone*. i'm pretty sure i won't like the show itself, as i get enough of that sort of thing on the news (hence why i haven't watched prev. seasons). but i think it would be ok if i skip to richard's parts and mute it. worth a shot anyway :)

Date: 2008-12-01 01:56 pm (UTC)thank you, i am a lot fitter i just love flexing my muscles and looking at them. how creepy is that? still have quite a lot of excess fat, but you know, i don't mind that much, i don't want to be all skin & bones or all pumped-up muscle, like the scary body-building ladies. i want to lose about 10k more via exercise (and possibly reducing my enormous coca cola intake), and then i think it'll be a good weight for me.
