{ The Evolution of Ari Haswari. }

I've spent the last couple of hours ironing and watching season 1 NCIS (was getting fuzzy with the Ari timeline and it was making fanfiction difficult). A couple of things. Firstly, that whole idea that Kate couldn't stab Ari when she had the chance are kind of... well, wrong. Because she's going to do it when Ducky tells her not to because Ari is daring her to make the attempt. So she doesn't, and she confronts Ari about it, and he turns his back on her again and so she makes another attempt and fails because he knew that's what she was going to do. So for Ducky to then suggest to Jethro that she hesitated is pretty backwards, because the first attempt was shot down by Ducky himself! So. I don't know.

I've also been trying to iron out Ari's timeline in an attempt to work out Ziva's. Ziva's should be straight forward, except that she's linked into Ari's story, and also Jenny's, the latter being fucked up by all the back-story they randomly conjure up for Jethro. Ari's is actually the easiest to work out, and is complicated solely by his vendetta against Gibbs (which springs up seemingly out of nowhere).

1969: born, son of Hasmia Hawari and Dr Benjamin Weinstein (Weinstein = Eli David, undercover)

1994: Graduated from Edinburgh Medical school; did his post-grad work there at Centre for Disease Control

c.1995-2000: Worked with Hasmia in Gaza until she died in an Israeli air strike which he (and later Ziva) believes was ordered by Eli David. This is the turning point in his relationship with his father (which I doubt was all that solid to begin with).

2004: Bête Noir; he's working for Mossad; has infiltrated Hamas. He goes to NCIS to retrieve Qassam, a Hamas agent; the Israelis put his body in the morgue so there's some politicking going on behind the scenes. He maintains he's not a terrorist - shoots Gerald to maintain his cover - goes out in a shoot-out with Jethro (who suffers a through-and-through. Cue Gibbs' obsession.)

2004: Reveille; Hamas orders a hit on Bush and Sharon; Haswari kidnaps Kate but hands her back when it turns out she can't tell him which chopper will have the dignitaries. Gibbs shoots his shoulder out of spite/for Gerald.

2005: Twilight; Kill Ari; undercover in Hamas for FBI to find an Al-Qaeda cell (that he's actually running) but for whatever reason he starts to lose his head and starts a dangerous game with Jethro. I guess because he's about to prove his alliance to Hamas? Kills 2 Navy operatives, tries to kill Jethro at a coffee shop, booby traps NCIS crime scene - all of which are distractions because his aim is to orchestrate an attack against a ship returning from the Gulf. Then he kills Kate and starts up a rampage against Jethro's team until Ziva kills him. I'm guessing that Ziva only hands over her info on Jethro a day or so before Ari kills Kate - information he asks for when he begins to get ever more obsessed.

So. It doesn't all make sense. Somewhere in all that confusion he begins to align Jethro with his father, which I've always thought was an interesting comparison considering Ziva eventually comes to NCIS. But this is useful, because we can work out a lot about Ziva in the interim. Before Kill Ari she spends 6 months in the UK. In Shalom we learn that Eschir was on Ari's extraction team but I'm still trying to work out if that's Bête Noire or Reveille. It's Reveille; Fornell mentions losing one of his FBI guys (I think probably when they swoop in to grab the guys who are trying to ambush the choppers). Sometime in this time frame Ziva and Jenny would have been roaming West Europe, and Eli David had to have some sort of in with Leon Vance. (I get the sense that Jenny's rise to Director was a surprise and that she wasn't the Deputy Director of NCIS at any time. Which is... well, odd. Because Jethro and Jenny both know Leon pretty well before he turns up to replace her.)
