Instead of catching up on my backlog of CBS crime shows (and Bones) I spent a lot of time last night watching The Big Fat Quiz of the Year from 2006. Noel Fielding and Russell Brand - together! Why did no-one tell me of this beautiful thing before? They're ridiculously excellent as a pair, not to mention openly hilarious. I love Fielding's humour and the way Brand talks. [livejournal.com profile] raeyashi told me to look around for the 2007 edition so that's what this morning will likely be devoted to.

Chugat (To You)
by Michael Davit (poem & translation)

ná fan rófhada liom
mura dtagaim sa samhradh bán
uaireanta meallan an fharraige mé

ar an mbóthar fada chugat
níl inti ach mo dheora féin

slánaigh do chroí
ná habair gur thréigeas thú
abair gur bádh mé
don't hold out too long
if I don't come in sweet summer
sometimes the sea has her way with me

on the long road to you
she is swollen with my tears

salvage your heart
never say I left you
say I drowned

I should probably get off my back end and email SK already. Sometime in the next couple of days I will more than likely be watching copious amounts of season 2 of X-Files. I need to get me an icon, for the movie if nothing else.

Please excuse my ignorance - what language is the original written in? The translation is lovely.

Hee, not ignorance because I can say it's Irish, but I can't tell you which dialect, or if it's Gaelic. So. Irish it is, then, lols.

It's Irish indeed, and our dialects have been standardized in the written form for a while now (though there's still a lot of disparity in the spoken varieties). We call it Gaeilge, but most English speakers call it Gaelic or Irish.

It's a lovely translation too, if not entirely true to the original (for instance, I would translate the second line 'if I don't come in the white summer'). Thanks so much for this. It's lovely to see the Irish language appreciated.

Thanks for the clarification!

I guess it was artistic license on the poet's part? He translated his own work; I figure he liked his version better, lols.

But he and David Mitchell won the next year (so I blame Walliams, lols).
