Do you know why there's such a thing as feminist studies or queer studies or globalisation studies? BECAUSE FOR THE LONGEST TIME, THE WORLD WAS CATERING TO THE NEEDS OF THE FEW AND IGNORING THE SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE OF THE WOMAN, THE NON-HETEROSEXUAL, THE COLOURED, THE NON-WHITE-HETEROSEXUAL-MALE THAT MOST OF US ARE.

Campaigning parents plan to burn children's books with grisly endings because apparently children's lives are grisly enough. I feel like these people need a good smack around the head. If the books are whatever that modifier is that they're using, they're actually doing those kids a favour. You know why? because to be denied your reflection, to not see your subjective experience in the world around you is to be DENIED YOUR RIGHT TO YOUR SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE.

This makes me so angry, so indignant, I can't even express myself. How many times do I meet people who I just want to shake hard. YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT. You're missing the point. (I mean - the tragic form and the human self! The correlation between the two! NOT TO MENTION: BURNING, DELETING FROM EXISTENCE WHAT YOU DISAGREE WITH? What. The. Fuck.)

Oh. my. fucking. hell. That put me in a very, very bad and angry mood. PEOPLE! GET SENSE! Reading books that aren't all lolly-jolly is healthy for your children (though of course I'm not implying that they're all that kids should read). It helps them develop ways to deal with the unpleasantness of the world, not only with the happy-joy-joy (because no, children should not be lulled into the belief that "goodies will come on top", because then they'll just be unable to handle it when reality doesn't play out that way), it develops their skills at empathy too, all of this because books allow a person to face and contemplate unpleasant issues and drama in a way that's safe and controllable and so, less scary. Sure, maybe kids aren't ready for Silence of the Lambs and such, and yes, there is a line, but christ, not there, not where they're putting it. /rant

Sorry. Got aranting there a bit, didn't I. But yeah. Burning? What the fuck? I want to bitch-slap these people to the moon.
