so you can make me come
that doesn't make you jesus
Admittedly I've always prefered Scarlet's Walk over Tales of a Librarian as a composite, but taken as one-offs, the latter has some amazing pieces. Precious Things is brilliant as an open to the album, and has some killer couplets, including the above and:
yes, my loyalties turned
like my ankle
There's something entirely fantastic about that metaphor, not just that it's unexpected and unusual, but because it takes the entire idea and replaces with narrative. It's almost metonymy, but also more complex and engaging than that. GUH. I LOVE IT.

I spent most of the day watching The Wire because I'm into it pretty hardcore now, although I did spend just over an hour this afternoon with
xanitia. We're (hopefully) meeting up tomorrow and then, if I can get a lift sorted, I may be going line dancing with her. lolz. I don't even know. Sounds good, though.
Tonight is The Dad's Rotary Club meeting, so I think we're having take-out. Which, frankly, seems a little wrong to me, but it's a rhythm that The Mother and The Sister have taken up in my absence, so it's not like I can argue it. Unfortunately, there are no good films on so I don't really know what we're going to do.

xanitia came with me to the post office and then the library where I decided to only hand back two of the three books that I took out a month ago. The third I renewed - Anita Desai's Fasting and Feasting. On first look I didn't much like it but I was reading it again whilst waiting for
xanitia and decided I should give it another try. So far, so good. I read Desai when I was in year 11 - the tutor gave me her copy of Clear Light of Day. I liked it, but it took me a while; I think I'd have a better time with it now.

UGH. Amazon for the FAIL. My stuff should have arrived by now and yet it hasn't. FAIL FAIL FAIL.

I was thinking about my entry for
numb3rswriteoff and I realised that I'd probably have a better time rewatching season 3 if I had someone to watch with. Sometimes I sort of resent the fact that a lot of my RL friends don't really connect to fandom AT ALL. I mean, The Flatmate is in love with David Tennant, and I convinced T to watch Weeds and Criminal Minds but that's about it. SIGH.
Oh, speaking of, I have picspam to post. Lots of picspam. Shiny, colourful picspam. &c. &c. You get the idea, I'm sure. (Shiny! Pretty!) Also, sometimes I feel like going friends only, just so that I can use a banner. Which is blatantly ridiculous, I know. AND YET.

Also: have never heard Precious Things, but the lyrics quoted remind me of Not David Bowie a little, which goes I am not the reason / you are not David Bowie. Except that that's not similar at all. The sentiment is, a little. BABBLING.

Date: 2007-08-13 07:11 pm (UTC)Casanova is brilliant . Between Tennant, and the chemsitry between Byrne and O'Toole, not to mention the wonderful sets, I just love the whole thing. Have you seen it through yet, or just an episode/two?
HAVE NOT HEARD IT, WHAT. And yet, I think the brilliance of that lyric what you quoted me is that it's so - it's two things at once, out of context. It's I am not AND you are not, and it's what it reads in one line. AND AND AND that one line says a hundred things about the relationship - part failure, part blame, part aspiration. oh. !

Trade you David Bowie for Precious Things?

Tarzan's way of speaking is known as using holophrastic phrasing, a term used to describe the speech of toddlers because they use very short phrases to convey a wealth of information. HOLOPHRASTIC. Isn't that fantastic?!) (lol, ILU2).

Hee! I love the whole thing, even elements of S3 which I felt were a little lacking (and which I complain of, often, heh). Have you managed to see S3 yet?

Date: 2007-08-13 07:32 pm (UTC)I guess so, because the focus spreads a little. S3 compensates in a fairly big way.

Also, hello! *waves* I downloaded your crazy voicepost and will listen in a bit, mwahahaa.

Date: 2007-08-15 09:58 am (UTC)It's just so--- all encompassing! And sort of hilarious, too. I'm well into the second half now, but there's scenes like when McNulty and Bunk just swear through and through, or McNulty sending his kids to tail Avon (?!) I really love the bust scenes, too, because Kima is hardcore and I love her. /rambling
OHNOES. lol. I'm a headcase, just to remind you :)

Date: 2007-08-15 10:36 am (UTC)It is! I love how... all things sort of come together, and how you really have to pay attention to seemingly random details because they might prove to be important later on, and then you (well, at least I) get random geek moments when you manage to make a connection. And yes, funny too. Yay! You watched that swearing scene! I loved it. That scene has become sort of an inside joke for me and The Bro-in-Law. Kima is hardcore. Also? Bunk is love. I've always loved that actor even though I don't know his name. And I kind of really love Stringer being all business man and... Um, I don't know if I'm going to spoil you or not, so I'll say no more. Also, I so need to re-watch from the beginning.
I think I'm going to have to learn how to pronounce your name properly, because um, I think I don't do so already?

Date: 2007-08-15 10:55 am (UTC)Hee! I also love how characters who at first seemed like a pain in the behind turned out to be made of awesome. Like Lester and his mini-furniture! And Prez who decided to shoot the wall *headdesk* I just enjoy the ensemble, and I love that it's set in Baltimore. (Also: love the theme tune.)
Aie, that's what I was worried about, except with your name! Which is why I spent a lot of that voice post feeling really stupid. Was fun though. Mostly. :)
no subject
Date: 2007-08-15 11:39 am (UTC)I know! Exactly! I mean, Prez, for example, seemed like a real tit at the beginning, but he grows on you when he starts finding purpose for himself. I find most of the characters like that, and that's what I love about the show: how the characters have flaws and aren't perfect and occasionally annoy you and occasionally make you love them, and how I get the feeling that the writers are doing it deliberately. (I love it too. I have the full version in Turku. I'll send it to you when I get back, if you'd like. I even might have the original Tom Waits version, but I'm not sure.)
:) Well, you did pronounce it slightly wrong. I mean, the vowels were pronounced correctly, but there was a bit of trouble with the emphasis. What you said was Eliina, with the emphasis on the second syllable, whereas the 'i' should be as short as 'e' and 'a' and the emphasis should be more on the first syllable. Anyway. *G* It was funny! Most of the words didn't make any sense to me, but it was fun listening to it. And you have such a lovely voice anyway. Also, I loved your random geek moments! And you did pronounce 'saatana' and 'perkele' correctly, though yeah, 'helevetti' was a bit off. Never mind though. :) (Oh, if I was feeling mean, I'd make you pronounce "Ookko nää Oulusta? Pelekääkkö nää polliisia?" which is a clichéd example phrase of the Oulu dialect. ...But I'm not that mean. ...Really.) And by the way, I myself always pronounce my username as V Liberation, which is odd since it doesn't read that! But yeah, Double-U Liberation is good, but Wilberation is NOT ON.

Date: 2007-08-15 12:04 pm (UTC)I often wonder if her albums get like that because she just wants to put everything on them at once. I was trying to decide if I'd like ADP better if it was shorter and much more selective.
The writers are sharp, yo. They really know what they're doing, which is what I like about the pacing. It's very tight, if you understand my meaning. I'm anticipating that the second season won't be as connected but I'm getting ahead of myself. (I'm up to the episode with the basketball game.)
Ah, yeah. In Britain, pronunciation falls on the second syllable, which is why I was worried, because I know emphasis is different in other countries. (My American housemate drives me batty because, for example, she'll say RO-bin Hood and I say Ro-Bin Hood.) Hee. Your language is so pretty on paper. You have to try and teach me that phrase now *g*
Hee, from now on I will think of you as V Liberation (also: is easier to say!) My sister just doesn't read - she looks at things and approximates the order of the letters. Like, tja_rama, she'll say that 'T-J-rama'.
