That Serbia won made everyone in the house scratch their heads but the real question of the night is WTF MALTA? Why on earth did we get 12 points from you?

O, Eurovision. We love you.

I didn't think Serbia was that bad, to be honest. But I'm not arguing with the Maltese. It got us up from nil points, so I guess that means less of the rest of Europe mocking us.. though they'll probably still mock us for the craposity that was our entry... oh well.

XD Eurovision makes me inexplicably happy. Really.

No, we didn't think Serbia was so bad. Didn't think it that much of a Eurovision song. Thought the Ukraine would walk away with it. And the Irish got us up from nil to seven; Malta got us to 19. Everyone in the room heard the result and swore loudly.

T: "Do the British even know where Malta is?"
Me/Flatmate: "NO."

Malta is south of Sicily! I think. I know it's north of Libya.

I actually liked most of this year's songs, especially the ones in the semis - ironically, most of my favourites didn't get through.

Also: why do Israel get to take part when they're in Asia? /random

I think.
I rest my case. :)

The first year with the semis was the year the Ukraine won with Wild Dances. Which, by the way, I totally pegged. I still love that song.

It's because no single continent ever claims Israel, so no-one really knows if it's in Asia or Europe. Much like Russia.

We-ell. *looks it up*

I was right. ;o)

I... go through phases with that song, I hated it at first, but then it grew on me, then I hated it... I haven't heard it in forever. I'm mid-tracking down a ton of Eurovision songs though. And I always thought Russia was 'EurAsia' or whatever 'they' call it. Because it... spreads across the two, I guess. Or something. I need to find a map!

LOL. Eurovision is a song contest between European countries. 24 finalists sing (generally awful) songs and then each country votes for who they want to win. You can award a country 1 to 12 points; you can't vote for yourself. The country who gets awarded the most phoned votes is given 12 points from your country. So UK got 7 points from Ireland and 12 from Malta; we awarded Turkey 12 points.

Serbia won.

Hee, ABBA :D

Yeah, the scoring works via percentage of calls. So everyone in the UK calls a callcentre in the UK and the same for countries across Europe. And then say 90% of the UK vote went to Turkey - Turkey gets 12 points from us. But that on it's own doesn't mean anything. You don't have to get high scores from every country to win - you just have to get the highest accumulation of points.

Oh boy: the songs are pop/craptastic. It's fabulous!
