I really wanted Jenny's character to be Bonnie-esque, like she makes the decision that if she's going to be there, she's actually going to be there, hell or high waters. And then she'd be as violent as the family she's mixed up in. I thought they'd go there, too, with her covering up for the boys (I was worried she'd see the evidence of the crime and then flip out, but she was calm and collected which is what I was looking for from that character.) I think Mother Donnelly is like that - in for a penny, in for a pound.

I'm also not the greatest fan of the Tommy-was-driving-the-car scenario because it feels like one detail too much. But really, these things pale in comparison to how tragic and amazing this series is. I'm really itching to see more. I always like stories that deal with intense sibling relationships, and the idea of being trapped in your blood bonds. Tommy is the good one, but the blood pulls him back, and that sense of being so close to one another that everything depends on your brothers, everything on them is on you. Like I said, tragic, and Tommy looks to be like that more and more.

There is obviously some sort of reveal coming up regarding Joey Icecream, especially with the story cutting him in all the time, and how he could never get his facts straight in the pilot. Also: "I always wanted brothers like that." How much can you trust what Joey's saying?

Other than those plot issues, I really like the way the story is made to unfold, especially all that cutting in the first episode. The first 30 minutes of that episode were intense, with the second half of the episode being just asstrong but for other reasons. And the soundtrack is awesome, in a way that really works considering the stuff they're choosing. Anyway, looking forward to seeing more.

Two episodes of Prison Break tonight, and then Battlestar Galactica. I handed in my essay this morning then headed to the main campus and edited the group research skills project. I feel bad about being such a bitch now because the editor didn't sleep last night. When I saw her at 11am, she'd been in the library since 7pm the night before, so, hardcore. But I handed that in too. Came back, bought some blank DVDs and then read. Finished Roll of Thunder - I loved it, really, really did, mostly because it didn't shy away from brutal ideas, and because the ending was resonant. I think children's literature should be more like that. Perhaps not so didactic, but whatever. (Speaking of, they're introducing a series of books in the UK for kids which involve homosexual relationships. One is called "King and King". Not to be entirely crass, but perhaps "Queen and Queen" would have been more appropriate?) Then read the first two essays in Jon Stewart's Naked Pictures of Famous People - I'm not certain I'm a fan of his prose. Then read the first two chapters of Northern Lights and realised that I really don't remember a lot of what happens in the His Dark Materials trilogy, but I do know that I prefered the series to Harry bloody Potter. (The Devil Wears Prada continues to be a fun read.)

I want Jimmy to know that Tommy was driving the car. I understand that Tommy running from the family is a major source of animosity, but it would be so cool if Jimmy knew and held it over his head or something.

I do like Jenny in a way. She's not my favorite character, but she's not my least by far.

Joey either is one of the Donnelly's or involved in the the story much more than he is currently. He's a great ambiguous narrator. "What's Joey Ice Cream doing here?" That's what I want to know.

Kevin is easily my favorite character. He's that fluffy dog that always digs in the flower bed even when you tell him otherwise and you can't bring yourself to hate him. My friend calls him Fredo-esque, but I hope not. I rather enjoy him too much to see him betray everyone.

I never thought of it that way - that would be a different kind of awesome.

I don't think there are any characters on this show that I actively dislike. I like Jenny, and all things considered, I liked the scene when she calls it off with Tommy. (I have ep3 to watch now. I've not been this buzzed about a show in quite a while.)

The former was my theory; the second seems much more plausible. I love when he pops into the narrative, even the characters don't know what he's doing there.

Hee, Kevin. He has this comical edge but he really played out in that second episode - stepping up and not being able to pull through because he's still pretty young in relative terms. I don't know if I can pick a favourite character. I like how tragic Tommy is (and let me take a moment here to flip out over the awesome choice of casting that is Kate Mulgrew) and I like this tight interdependency between the brothers, but I've yet to make definite yay/nay votes on the characters.

I'm off to watch the third episode. Maybe I'll have made my mind up after that?

But seriously, I talk about it for two reasons: one, because it something that interests me with varing degrees of intensity and two, because it helps me to work out my position on what I'm reading. I'd keep a reading journal but this works just as well.
