Feb. 26th, 2007 01:21 pmI? Am a library queen. I'm a pro with the crazy ass Dewey Decimal system. I can use a library a couple of times and the know where to find everything I need. I know the fastest search engines, the most useful library assistants, opening hours, extended opening hours. I know how the load systems work, I know how inter-library loans systems work, I know how the damn card indexes work and which ones are complete/incomplete. I know all this information for two libraries on campus and two libraries in Lincolnshire. I also have a half-decent understanding of how the library at P. works, even though I've been there a total number of three times in my life.
Why do I mention this?
Because I got lost in the stacks at Hartley the second time in a fortnight this week, wtf.
The books I need are usually on the fifth floor but they're renovating and now I can't find anything. Our quarto editions follow the Dewey system, not the usual university library system and I've located them on the third floor (with engineering, of all things) so that wasn't so bad, but then I needed to get some books on Tudor social history and WebCat naturally sent me to the history stacks on floor 4. I get there and wind my way to the back of the building where the books I need are supposed to be. When I get there, the books are all about local histories (Leeds, York, London &c.) I figure the books I'm looking for are under London or Surrey. As it turns out, the books I was looking for WEREN'T THERE. Want to know why? Because the stacks were MIS-LABELLED. I came home empty-handed.
I didn't even pick up the book I needed for children's lit because even though there are supposed to be three copies of the quartos and none of them are on loan, people have taken them. I came back with three website/MUSE listings and an essay plan, so that's what I'm off to tackle now.

Did lots of walking today, though. From Pw to Avenue to Hartley and back. Bumped into The Flatmate on my way back. Whilst I was promising to have some of my essay done today, five cars drove up University road, beeping their horns. In the first one, a guy was stood up, leaning out of the sun roof.
This is how you know it's electoral season on campus. Well, this and the masses of t-shirted campaigners attacking random freshers at the SU. (Hilarious, by the way. They work in packs.)

I don't suppose anyone wants to write me a character reference? I can call you 'a family friend', or something. I might as well write it myself. I'm writing my parents' one for them. The Dad was like, "You write it, I'll sign it." Um, okay.

Oh my god, I nearly forgot.
muldy your disc arrived today, and your postcards! Thank you so much! (This is a relief because my attempts have been failing this week.) I'll take a photo once I've pinned the cards to my wall! *excited* Oh, I totally stole those Audrey pics, too. Post those asap.
Also, my copy of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close turned up today. Huzzah! It looks awesome. I can't wait to start it. (Note to self: remember to do set reading today, too.)
