Let's just say that not very much has been done up until now. I am listening to Casablanca so as to pay attention to the soundtrack. That's right, listening. The scene I'm going to study is the one right after the flashback to paris, when Ilsa comes to see Rick to try to explain to him why she left. (It has this fabulous opening shot; Sam is playing 'As Time Goes By' and Ilsa is in the background in the door. The entire room is dark except for the doorway, and the light spills across the scene/frame. So awesome.) I wanted to analyse the scene before the flashback, but I love that one image of Ilsa in the door so I passed it over. Also, the music cue in the back of Ilsa's speech is a bastardisation of 'As Time Goes By'; the other musical cue in the film is the score played off Le Marseillaise. I don't recognise Vaterland by ear, so I can't tell if it plays anywhere in the movie other than the scene after Rick tells Victor to ask Ilsa why he won't give them the transit papers, with the Nazis singing and then Victor making the club band play Le Marseillaise.

Um, so I'm nerding out over this and still not actually doing the essay. (Alas, I fear I'm supposed to reference the core texts. That's right, the ones I've yet to read. Bugger.)
