{ you gonna miss de girl. }
Aug. 11th, 2006 03:08 pmOH MAN.
WHAT THE FUCK. OK, so the whole idea of Carson's retrovirus whatsits is to convert wraiths into humans, and we already have this whole issue of well, if they're human, shouldn't they be protected? etc. etc. BUT. Conversion is basically Sheppard turning involuntarily into a Wraith. THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE. And just look at how batshit everyone goes. Ohnoes, we must saaaave him (which, indeed they must, but not my point). BECAUSE THEN THEY HAVE NO QUALMS ABOUT TURNING AND BASICALLY DOING THE SAME TO THE WRAITH? Not to mention the complete bigotry of assuming that being human is the morally superior position. And how black&white are the wraith presented to us? Jebus. Anyway, that just occured to me. I was trying to remember which episode Condemned was. And then I figured that out and found this and aie.

But nobody listens to Kavanagh, because he's percieved as a mutinous, whiney troublemaker.)
As for Conversion: I think everyone's more worried about saving Sheppard - because he's one of them, and they know him and they need him - than they are about the moral implications. Though that doesn't explain why no one brings those up at the time of Carson's retrovirus. (But they started it!)

And yes, Sheppard is very obviously the focal point for that episode for various reasons. I just think... look, there's a moral highground that's established in that episode that such a thing is not on. It's established then and there, and THEY ESTABLISH IT. And ask;ldkjafkl!!!
I have a hundred and one issues over the Lantean moral code, so it's a good thing that I watch this show for the pretty people anfd nothing deep (like, say, BSG). That said...did you see 3x05 yet?

Date: 2006-08-12 02:27 pm (UTC)They were Teyla's words, but you're right in saying she seems to have a better-developed sense of right and wrong than most of the members of the expedition do.
That said...did you see 3x05 yet?
Yes, and dude, could we please try to get through an episode without resorting to genocide? Talk about skewed ethics; it's worrying how little qualms they have about blowing up whatever/whoever poses a threat to them these days. This episode sits wrong with me in so many ways. (and what's with that last scene? that was just creepy)

Date: 2006-08-12 02:44 pm (UTC)If they would've been a little less rash, they could've gotten out of there with a living, breathing Ancient to milk (sure, he's a machine, but he's still modelled after the Ancient, so surely he must know things about Atlantis - or the Atlantis-model city, at least - they don't), and possibly even a ZPM.
This is the second time this season that they were very close to adopting a foe become friendly and bringing him back to Atlantis to a) provide shelter and b) learn from him, and end up killing him after they discover that his true nature cannot be suppressed ... and again with trying to suppress natural urges in the first place, although I suppose it was justified this ep because Niam asked for it.
*watches* lol!! that's hilarious.
