OK, so whilst The Cousin is still asleep (she leaves today, ohnoes!) and whilst I'm (still) waiting for it to be 9am, I guess I can finally talk about the 1.5 movies I watched this week. Fanaa is a hindi movie that I've been waiting to see ever since
kabutar brought its existence to my attention; Krrish is a movie I found out about on Monday, and is the sequel to Koi Mil Gaya. Krrish is the one I half-watched; I was also reading Lolita at the same time because the book needs to be returned today but I think I'm going to have to renew it.
To begin with, Fanaa seems a typical BW romance. Kajol plays Zooni, a blind Kashmiri girl who has come to Delhi with friends to perform a dance at a concert which is celebrating India. There she meets cheeky, flirty, poetic tour-guide Rehan (Aamir Khan) who, yes, she falls in love with. It's funny, engaging, the music is great and the dialogue is amusing. Everything is going so well! Rehan decides that he can be faithful to one girl and whisks Zooni off her trainride home! They go to a doctor and find out that Zooni's blindness can be solved via operation! Huzzah!
Except then there's a bomb blast in Delhi. Zooni thinks that Rehan is dead; Rehan is actually the terrorist who set off the bomb. GASP. Except I knew that already.
The second half of the film is what really surprised me. From the pre-marital sex that ends the first half, to the illigitimate son (!), to the way the whole story was handled, I was so impressed. It amused both me and the cousin that such shenanigans are watching in Hollywood films but we cringe to see them in BW ones. The ending was a perfect tragedy.
The music is still so much love, and although I didn't quite expect Des Rangila to be played out the way it was, it's still my favourite track on the soundtrack. Aamir Khan was excellent in both halves of the movie but the real star, of course, was Kajol who gets better the more mature she is. I confess, I've not always been a Kajol fan but she was wonderful in this film. Zooni is a strong, brave character, hurting and beautiful; Kajol pulls off all the nuances of the character so well. She just glowed on the screen. Wonderful.
Random: LARA DUTTA WTF. If you like foreign films and can see that cliche isn't always a bad thing, see this movie. It's worth it. I think that of all the Bollywood movies I've seen in recent years, this was by far the best.
In other news Krrish is crack. The ending was clever but Hrithik and Priyanka's relationship was horribly forced and the movie was pretty crap. Koi Mil Gaya was never fabulous but I do think that Hrithik acted very well in it and the music and story were enjoyable. Krrish is just stupid.
OK. So, ten minutes and then I get to make three phonecalls. Got yesterday's ET with the job listings and circled a few. There's one which I saw last week and didn't know if I should go for but considering it's still there, I'm going to call them up today and hopefully start on Monday. That's if I can figure out where it is (P, I think). They need temp and permanent people, and students are welcome. So fingers crossed this time. The one thing I hope it doesn't disrupt is my lunch date next week. That would make me very sad.
Lastly,
