So, after reading a ton of Rose/The Doctor fic, I have finally figured out why the ship works for me in fic but not in canon. Because Rose/The Doctor is basically Kate/Jet in fic, where he thinks she's wonderful but not really understanding the Weight of his Age and Experience (and the slight apprehension over The End), and she loves him but is ever more frightened of him Leaving/letting her go. BUT! In canon...I just think of The Doctor in a completely different way; I'm always thinking, "Yeah, but, he has a responsibilty to THIS and She shouldn't really be more important than THAT because surely that doesn't fit his whole ethos?"
Also, in canon, I'm less assured of Rose/The Doctor being an actual Ship. I think Ten is damn exuberant and touchy-feely so it comes across that way (I mean, his affection to Sarah Jane underscores that pretty well; I don't think he's ever been In Love with a companion - Rose is Special because of Bad Wolf, but I don't think that alters his feelings all that much. Um. What I'm saying is, the hugging stuff is just another quirk of Ten's personality). I have a hard time swallowing Rose/Nine as a Ship, too, because he and Rose aren't equals in the way that Rose/Ten sort-of are. Nine is teaching Rose; Ten's just the tourguide.
I'm so incoherent. I guess that in fic, it's generally just Rose and The Doctor, so I dn't feel obliged to think about the Responsibilities The Doctor has to the Others that they encounter in their stories. But, yeah. In conclusion fic!Rose/Doctor = Kate/Jet.
