{ Numb3rs 213: Double Down }
Jan. 16th, 2006 01:53 pmSo, I've come to the conclusion that the fangirl who upset me is not a crazy at all. In fact, regardless of the fact that we have completely opposite views, I am on her side. Nobody made me read her post - I did it myself. And I was upset by the sentiment but honestly? Those were her evidenced opinions that she is perfectly entitled too. Why shouldn't she be allowed to voice them? The contention here is NOT the content of the post, more my reaction to it, which was wrong, by the way. I was very wrong. The real problem here is that in fandom you have onflicting views and not everyone is adult enough to deal with it. (Including me, apparently). Take, for example, the GSR crazies at YTDaW. I'm spoiler-free these days so I don't go to that site at all anymore. It's all very well that they're for the ship but they're rude to people who disagree with them. This is bad fandom, yo. There should be space for GSR, GCR, CWR - everything. But there isn't and those boards are very hostile towards alternatives.
That being said: if you don't like what's being said, stop going there. Which I have done. So yay me.
To the poin at hand: I really liked this episode. Having also just watched Manhunt, I still hold that season 2 is a completely different show to season 1. It's just as good, it's just different. A bit more contrived, even. I don't know.
Two boo-boos: taking Larry to the casino the hell? Bad idea. And I'm disappointed by the writing there. Also, Alan and Charlie playing cards and Alan feeling more confident? Um, hello. Did you not see Identity Crisis when Alan said he'd only played with Charlie the once and never again? And they'd only been playing for bottle caps? Huh?
Apart from that, a tender look at Larry, I think, if a little unsympathetic at times. Good to see Amita again, regardless of what some people think of the character. She's not been around for a couple of episodes so it was nice to have her around. I like the idea that Larry was so distracted that he couldn't fully perform in his role as mentor/sidekick to Charlie. I loved the coke/mint thing (we did it to someone's diet coke with millions, hee), and what is with Don stealing Charlie's food all the time? *boggles*
Megan is very pretty when she sits in that big evidence compilation room. Seriously. And could they make more of a misogynist of Colby? They'd cut back on it after the first two episodes and then it sprang straight up again. That being said, I still like the character, and I'll be interested to see an episode that features a case that might mean a bit more to him than normal. David amuses me. He's definitely got more balls this season (in Manhunt he's with Cooper and there's that fantastic scene when Coop wants to dig through the garbage and David's all "Um, illegal much? Look, just use gloves. I don't want your trash germs ohnoes!") and after last week, it was a shame there was no follow up. That being said, it's also good that there was no follow up because I really don't want this to be that kind of show.
Megan. Oh Megan. It's no secret that I really like her character. When Larry comes in to confess, she has this kindly smile, even when she has to force the words out of him. There's this odd scene when she's talking to David and Don outside the FBI building and David walks off, and she looks very sad. I thought maybe there was an addenum there with her and Don because the cut to the next scene is really, really strange. (There's potential there for a discussion regarding Larry, and not necessarily in a shippy way).
OK, the case. I love cases about gambling because there's this one CSI episode when Warrick is trying to explain odds to Catherine. Putting aside the YoBling of that scene, I have crazy love for the way her talks about gambling. This case was no different and hearing Larry talking about his card counting system was fantastic. The math, as ever, sometimes jumped my head but I love Colby pulling him back in: "aaaand back in the parking lot?" Love. AND NEELIX OMG. Neelix was the gambling teacher guy! OMG! I guessed out that it would be the last kid but it took me a while to get there so that made a nice change of pace. I've noticed that we get a lot more context for crimes these days; in the pilot we opened with a news broadcast and cut straight to Don and Terry pedeconferencing.
The end of the episode made me smile. Ignoring the Charlie/Alan/poker fiasco, Don and Larry went off to have a drink! I like the idea that they're friendly beyond Charlie. And it was such an awesome line, too, on Don's part. Nice delivery.
All in all, I liked it. I thought the balance between character and case was good; Numb3rs tends to get that right. I liked the case this week, too, and I loved Peter MacNichol. Really good episode.
Have to wait for Friday now. Sigh. In other news, first essay stressage is over. Am taking the day off, dammit. I'm too tired. I have a 2,000 word essay due a week today, on poetry this time. We'll start the torture again tomorrow. I also have to revise this week for my exam next Tuesday. Basic grammar, pronouns, articles and the translation of the text. Yeah. This should be interesting. Oh, one more thing:
tja_rama is closed whilst end-of-semester crap goes on. Don't be alarmed, it'll be back up. I just need some space from the distractions.
Tonight the flatmate and I will be going to the cinema, probably to see Brokeback Mountain. That or Jarhead. I still want to see Memoirs, btw. All in time, I guess. OK. Off to do... oh, shit. Emails. Yeah.

Date: 2006-01-16 05:34 pm (UTC)yeah!! when i watched i remember thinking "hey, since when is charlie bad at poker?!" can you say "continuity error" :p fortunately it's just a small thing i guess, but still, it is a pretty obvious one...
And could they make more of a misogynist of Colby? They'd cut back on it after the first two episodes and then it sprang straight up again.
i have to admit, i loved colby in this episode (but then, i always love colby :p), but not necessarily because i liked the fact that he became "one of those guys" but more because i kinda secretly hope don finds out about the strip club fiasco and he gets in trouble :p (what can i say, i loooove my whump...)... i doubt that'll ever happen, but a crazed fangirl can dream, eh...
hope ya don't think i'm comin to your lj and trying to argue your points, cuz, well, i agree with basically everything you said, both about the ep and dealing with those "crazy" fans... i've been guilty of whining about them as well, but i do try to avoid the ones that annoy me... it's easier that way if i do say so myself.

Date: 2006-01-17 02:52 am (UTC)Oh no, I like him. I didn't when the season first started but now I want to see much more from him.
You're welcome to argue the points. It's my favourite part of fandom :)
The thing about Amita-haters is that they're not crazies; the people at Tax Dollars are. But whatever. Each to their own. I have this whole metaphor about how fandom is a room and if you don't like the decor, you don't have to stay there but it's a bit daft.

Date: 2006-01-17 04:12 am (UTC)yeah! they are! which is, i guess, why it makes this more puzzling than anything else... :o
Oh no, I like him. I didn't when the season first started but now I want to see much more from him.
yeah, he was a bit, er, dull at the beginning, but now i hope they make him a main character next year so we can get some real character development! :D

hehe... yeah, that metaphor (however ya slice it) kinda applies to just about anything... sadly some people just don't seem to realize they can be happy elsewhere *sigh*

Date: 2006-01-29 04:35 am (UTC)Yeah, I like that idea aswell, in a very un-shippy way.
Megan. Oh Megan. It's no secret that I really like her character. When Larry comes in to confess, she has this kindly smile, even when she has to force the words out of him.
I adore Megan, I like her better than Terry, even though some people might hate me for saying so ;) She's just much more fun, such a confident lady. She's just very cool!!
Oh no, I like him. I didn't when the season first started but now I want to see much more from him.
I didn't like him at first, a bit dull. But now I love him, love all the witty interaction with David... Hope they'll make him a main character (No offense, but he's more of a main character than Amita)
Overall I like the ep very much because I like the fact that Larry shares something about his past and does not tag alongside Charlie all the time... (though I like that, too^^"")
