Why is it that everytime i try to paint my nails, one always buggers up? And I was doing so bloody well, too.
Anyway, about twice a year, BBC1 shows Anna and the King, the most recent film version of Anna Leonowens' journals, featuring Jodie Foster as the tofty Anna, and the wonderful Chow Yun Fat as King Mongkut. I love this film so much. it's beautiful, playful, touching and points out with quite a heavy hand the downfall of the British Empire. That is to say, it doesn't shun away from the fact that the Empire exploited these people and that the "Great British Way" is a farcical and facetious way to remember the colonisation of the East. I love how the story brings together Anna's British customs and the Siamese traditions. I like that they compund the way that they do; I like that Anna is appalled; I like even more that all things have their own time in Siam, and that not even Anna's stiff-upper-lip quality couldn't change that.
The setting is beautiful, as is the cinematography. Chow Yun Fat is an awesome actor, and Jodie Foster is nothing if not appropriate to the role she portrays. The children were lovely, and the story of Tuptim's failed love was wonderfully portrayed, if not bitterly heartbreaking. The story is sentimentalised, of course, for Hollywood tastes but it's still a brilliant production. I adore it. (Especially the littlest princess! Oh, that bit makes me want to cry every damn time). So, for a lovely movie, I definitely recommend this film. It's just wonderful.
Tomorrow is the Miami finale and although I haven't seen a full episode since Lost Son, I promise
natushka that I would watch the finale, if only for Emily Procter's superb acting talent, which I am told has matured somewhat. I'm inclined to believe
natushka, because she damn well knows what she's on about :p Tonight is Catch Me If You Can but I think I'm going to skip that one. I still haven't seen Kill Bill so that's probably next. I have some request icons to post and a Thandie wallpaper but that can wait until I've done a couple of others.
Sigh. Busy! I want new Numb3rs, actually, butI suppose I'll have to wait a week or so for that. Shame. And my disks are in the house! I can't get to them!
