There is nothing wrong with being a fangirl. There is no age limit on when being a fangirl is acceptable. If you are ashamed of being a fangirl, you are the reason you should be ashamed. Why the fuck should we care what non-fanpeople think? IT DOESN'T MATTER. Be proud of your fangirlyness. Stupid.

Oops. I think I fall into the "in need of a slap" category. But, in my case (and some others, too, unless I'm wrong), saying "I know I'm too old but - " just adds to the whole frisson of the thing. Like turning down the chocolate fudge ice-cream when it's just offered, then going, "Oh all right, just this once!" But, I agree, it's tiresome for listeners and we should probably knock it off. Not as bad as 30-something women who bemoan their crow's feet and chase after their fly-blown youth, though. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to my old age - I imagine it will actually be easier to be a fangirl at the age of 60 than it is at the age of 39.
