So, because The Sister was watching Numb3rs on the computer, I decided (after watching S4 earlier this morning) to get out my Alias DVDs and watch the pilot. Again. The third time this week. With commentary. As a result of which I digged this song out of my archives and am now playing it on repeat. Odd. I always thought the lyric was 'I want to give you pain/faith' but no. Neither. I will return to repeating I Am A Town later but let me run this one through the mill first.
Anyway, Alias. Wow has that show changed. I mean, when it first started, there was the crazy fun of super-spying versus Syd's Real Life. I really miss the element of life that Francie and Will used to bring to the show. Now everything happens within the confines of APO and Syd's entire life is defined by the one thing she wanted out from all along. Which is really tragically sad, don't you think? (You don't have to answer that; I get the feeling I'm over thinking this). What I really miss is the idea that SpyDaddy may have been evil because in S4? They never really pull that off. By S4, we all know that Jack Bristow has done everything he ever could to help his daughter. But in S1 he goes from being a man who sells airplane parts to this double crossing spy (and let me tell you, that last scene in the pilot when we find out about Jack being the other double agent? Still makes me scream).
But Sydney's a character I no longer care about. I hate how I'm so fickle with fandom. I rarely attach to a protagonist because they're too well rounded. But I liked Sydney and not because of all teh complex things but because there was an element of humanity to her. She wasn't perfect. But she was cool. Like, super spy cool. And now she's just whiny and perfect and has no connection to anything beyond what she's doing. In S1, you sort of want there to be an end for her; now there will never be an end. you can never see her escaping that life and whilst that's sad, it's boring. The best thing in the world would be if Sydney went rogue - especially if she became a Derevko-esque figure. How awesome would that be?!
I have actually forgotten what my line of thought is. I still love Alias. I'm still faithfully d/l and watching S4. I still shriek at the right moments, I'm a total S/V shipper (not to mention Jack/Irina). Weiss makes my day, Rifkin is superb, Anna Espinosa's return made me clap excitedly like a little girl. But in terms of characterisation? I hope Sydney goes to a dark place and has to rise from the ashes because right now it's fruitless and circular and not working. *sigh*
But dude - Anna Espinosa!
