{ the woman with starlight in her soul. }
Nov. 15th, 2009 08:42 pmLast night The Mother and I watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Hancock, both of which she seemed to enjoy a lot. We spent most of today shouting 'opa!' at each other, which has been GREAT.

I think I'll probably like this more on a second viewing. Everything felt a bit... static on the superspying end. I was actually heavily invested in Nina and Lambert's relationship (and also Nina's hair; that's another topic though) but the episode was rushed, and I would have liked to have seen Ros doing more. Or rather, doing anything.
JO WAS FUCKING ROBBED. It was so predictable, and I know they tried to add an edge to it by having Ros be the one to pull the trigger (I did like that it was Nina and Lambert as the puppets) but at the end, it was a bit of a slap to the face, and there's no reason why the wounds to Jo had to be fatal. And now we have, what, Ros and Ruth? What? Damn.

lol: Ruth basically asked Tariq to shut down the internet. SAME GAG; STILL FUNNY.

I'm a little tired of reading people's WORST EPISODE EVER reactions, though. It's like people forgot that season 6 happened. I think these episodes feel off-kilter, and I'm not enjoying them as much as I did season 7. But the overkill of reaction to the way the plots play out is ridiculous.
I think these episodes will benefit from a re-watch. Although nothing will make Jo's death any less trite. SIGH.

Back to work tomorrow. My line manager is in again, and I have a one-to-one some time during the day. I have already decided that I need to purchase more of that wafer/chocolate stuff of wonder as incentive to get through the day.

I love when the Doctor is running around with an adult, because it always makes the stakes seem higher, I guess. Plus I've always had a preference for the more angsty/darker episodes. I still think that Tennant over-acts the vital moments (he was a bit too cartoon-villain for me at the end there, and I am still completely uninterested in his emo) but I did enjoy the episode a lot, and I think it's one of the better specials, too. Lindsay Duncan absolutely made the episode for me. Woman is a powerhouse.

I thought Tennant's crowning moment was when Adelaide called him out on what he'd just done. There was something completely chilling about that whole scene. (Then they ruined it by having the Doctor go all melodramatic).

WHAT WHAT WHAT. DOCTOR WHAT.

THAT MOMENT. The utter shock that followed it. I'm going to come right out and admit it: I found the Time Lord Victorious more exciting than I ordinarily find the Doctor.

Date: 2009-11-15 09:21 pm (UTC)Oh lord, that moment. It's like SFX magazine said in their online review - the Doctor's "and time WILL OBEY ME" fury is briefly uplifting, but everything after that? It was genuinely horrifying, because this is the guy we always imagine as saving the day, this is the LONELY GOD, and here he is going straight off the deep end. I think a lot of viewers were doing what Adelaide was doing at that moment: she was looking at the Doctor part in horror and part in sorrow, because he's just totally lost it.
(And kudos for the writers for making it believable. Like I said: at the end, he was recognizably the Doctor, which only made his behaviour even more chilling).
The climax of this episode was actually remarkably good: aside from the Doctor going nutzo, there was also the moment the girl (??) got trapped by the streaming water and shut herself in the tech room. Considering we knew nothing about this girl, her death was unbelievably horrifying.
(Um: was that LUCY SAXON in the promo? Because I just died with glee.)
I wondered that as well. I think it probably is?

The German woman! That was actually completely upsetting, especially hearing the futility of those around her. We'll come back for you. UGH. Gut punch.
