I have to go and read in a bit which is actually a good thing because if I get it done early enough, I can chill out later this afternoon. However, last night I indulged in fandom for a couple of hours. MADE OF AWESOME.

OK, not the best episode of the series but not worthy of serious hate. Millie makes me somewhat uncomfortable as a character as I guess she's supposed to but I really want to try to like her if she's going to be around some more which I guess she is. I would have liked them to back away from Alan/Millie, though, because I can do without that. I guess the thing about her is that she's sayin all things I think and makig me hate myself lolz? Something like that.

Charlie, why do you have to wait for Amita to say no before you make a move? Larry, why are you so awesome? Also: in caase you didn't know, Diane Farr is REALLY PREGNANT. Also also: NO COLBY. Sigh.

That said, much love for Alimi Ballard and for HOLY SHIT JOSHUA MALINA. So. Who's writing that slash fic? We all know of Don's track record with federal prosecutors... Maybe I should, heh. Not that I can write slash to save my life but whatever.

I don't know if I'll bother iconning this week. Let's see what Friday's episode is like. I have to say, I muc prefer episodes that are case heavy than people-heavy, though that's just the procedural-drama-lover in me. I don't know: the episode made me restless. WHICH IS A SHAME BECUSE THERE WAS JOSHUA MALINA being all cute and shit.

First off - when Jonas gets a showcase episode, he really gets one. When Bob gets a showcase episode, he really gets one. When Mack is in an episode for more than five minutes he...dresses up as a woman. WHAT?

Gripe over. I really love watching this show, and I love that it doesn't dend on a lot of continuity. It's the show that I watch as soon as I get it, every week. Summer Glau's voice - high pitched much? The character is a little grating but more manageable than the Col's wife which is a shame because I like that actress. This week's episode made Molly bearable, though, which is a plus. VERY WATCHABLE. I love that. I can be casually obsessive. edit: Scott Foley is the ex-Mr Jennifer Garner? Wow. I had no idea.

ilu McGee, which is saying something because mostly I don't care. DiNozzo and commitment is an interesting storyline, and Abby and Jenny talking about the guy Abby met last week was to awesome.

"The kids don't like it when mommy and daddy fight." ilu Abby! Also, Gibbs, Ziva and blogs was hilaiously funny.

Mostly, I think if I'm in a bind? I'd totally want Gibbs at my back.

And now back to reading.

I just spent half an hour working on my UK uni application. ! It's still terrifying and confusing, and I'm increasingly convinced I'll be accepted at exactly none of the universities I'm applying for. (Because I have NO GRADES YET.) Also: the many different English courses are faintly mind-boggling. End rant.

I watch things as I get them because I'm more impatient than anal, but I understand why you'd do it that way. Mondays, I watch Torchwood, followed by Studio 60, which is always a bit of a shock.

I was just randomly poking around the course search- I've still no idea where to apply. Actually, I ended up looking at Southampton, and got half a dozen different English courses, got confused and gave up. Temporarily. What's the difference between Applied English Language Studies and just plain English? & would there be any place to, I don't know, check if certain unis are any good?

Apparently my comment got cut off half way through? I'm watching them like that right now because I have a backlog and haven't been watching as I go - which is what I usually do, but I've spent most of my time reading this week, so I've had to put fandom aside. *pets fandom*

OK. If you're looking for a course in English literature, you're basically looking at straight English. (My course is just English. The code was Q300 when I signed up but I don't know if it's the same now.) English Language of any sort will focus on how language is used so there'll be linguistics in that, and social theories I should think, not to mention language acquisition. English lit. (some courses may be called that) looks at literary theory, and the various English literatures around the world, although mostly 16th-19th C. British literature.

Soton does English, English language, English as a taught language (for foreign students, but that's like learning French - no lit. in that, just basics), combined honours (English + something else, like film, classics, history whathaveyou) and I'm fairly certain there's applied language and linguistics, too. I think what you're looking for, though, is straight English, in any course that you look a across the UK.

It's still Q300. English language = Q310. Soton has a LOT of English courses; English + French and English + Spanish as well, to name a few. I like the linguistics and social aspects, too, but not enough to want them to be my main focus. So yes, straight English would be what I'm looking for. The main reason for me to want to study English lit. in the UK rather than here in Holland is that over here, it's (obv.) taught as a second language, (with the university specifically stating that "a high level of English is not a requirement") which is not what I'm looking for. (I'm definitely not excluding doing a year of English over here first, though. I think it'd be easier in many ways.)

My main problem is not knowing the reputation of any of the universities I'm looking at. & google only tells you so much. I'm putting Southampton on The List, though. They seem to have a lot of experience with international students, which is good. Also: 1 hour from London! Heh.

OK, yeah, that sounds right. There's a lot of combined honours in all the universities.

OK, well, there are league tables but different league tables tell you different things. Good places to go for English that I know of include Oxbridge (obvs.), Durham (v. v. good but futher north), Reading. I'll ask an ex-tutor of mine about one of the websites she directed me to. (It was a questionnaire thing which broke down the universities into what kind of grades they were looking for? And the unis I applied to wanted the higher grades. They'll be the better courses.

Oxford/Cambridge, even if I'd be accepted (which = way unlikely), I couldn't afford. My grades are not going to be stellar*, and since it looks like I won't be eligible for student aid if I study abroad, I'd be dependent on loans and/or scholarships. So I'm just trying to find something that's not say, top-5, but still good.

OK, so she doesn't know the site either which means it's probably down now, anyway. Two good sites are timesonline.co.uk and the one for the guardian newspaper. Google them at google.co.uk to mae sure you get the right papers. (The Times and The Guardian are more high-brow newspapers, TG is a broadsheet, TT used to be. But, TG is left-leaning, TT is right.)

I remembered that Nottingham is a really good place for English, and so is Newcastle (which has connections to Durham.)

The sites ask for tariff points which are made up of A level grades in the UK, but I'm not sure how that translates to you so you might want to email Nikki (who is going back to The Netherlands tonight, actually). When I searched for universities I was looking at unis that wanted me to get AAA or AAB grades (which translates to 360 points and 250 points. A = 120 pts, B = 100 pts.)

That's complicated but I think you'll need to understand tarrif points in order to be able to assess which universities are asking for higher grades.

OK, I see your point. A big contributing factor for me was whether or not the unis were in the north/south, and whether they were huge cities (which is why I didn't apply to London, and why I chose Soton over Newcastle.) Durham is very good but it's full of Oxbridge rejects,so you may want to avoid there, too.

As for student aid/loans - again, ask N. I know T is getting overseas funds but she's American. I can't remember what N's finances are.

It's slightly different for Nikki because she went to a bilingual school - she got an international diploma which made applying to schools in the UK/elsewhere easier. (+ I don't think she got my last email? I got a delivery failure notification a few days ago.)

Actually, I think I might just email some universities directly, because I'm poking about their websites anyway, and it seems a sensible option to just ask them what their admission requirements for international students are. ;) (I'm kinda hoping they won't make me do an English language test, because those are wicked expensive.)

I'll try the Times again - last time I got a bit lost, and I think they wanted me to pay for the listings? *shrug* I'll give it another shot, anyway.

Location isn't a big issue for me, aside from wanting to avoid London due to the money issue. I think if given the choice, I'd choose a smaller town/city over a big one, because cities tend to make me claustrophobic. (Also: people-phobic.)

I did, and she said she didn't apply for anything. I apparently get sent an application form for ... some kind of scholarship after applying through UCAS, though, and either way, deciding which unis to apply to is my first priority.
