Today has been ridiculously dull. The lectures I listened to were really good but after that I couldn't find anything to do. I watched the last three episodes of The Unit (omg) and then I tried to watch season 5 Alias but got bored out of my skull. What I really want is to watch more Big Love but the last two episodes air this coming Monday so, sigh. I guess I'll go back to watching The Pretender.

My cousin is coming to stay tonight, so that should shake things up a bit. Heh, The Parents are involved in the local Rotary Club and for some reason they're participating in a frog race today? No-one really has a clue what that is exactly. One assumes it onvolves racing frogs but it may be code for something else. Who knows?

OK, so, there's a comm I'm a member of and the mod has, well, deleted her journal. I want to take over the comm just so that it gives me more accessibility to sort things out over there because I'm just that commanding and bossy. Thing is, the LJ FAQ basically only reverts comm maintainership in cases of abuse. Who the hell can I email to say, hey, she's not here anymore? It's not the hugest issue but considering I contribute the most to the damn place, I'd like a little more control. I can't even add tags. The O/C personality in my shrieks with indignance. Sigh. No. Not a huge issue at all. But me wants!

To conclude: in all likelihood, I'll be sharing Sheryl Crow with you all on Friday.

ETA: Am listening to Regina Spektor's Begin to Hope and I may just WEEP IN DESPAIR. What is this mainstream stuff? Where has that raw sound gone? I mean, yes, it's still quirky (Fidelity has this vocal play that is fairly old-school) but the sound quality has just gone super-sharp and, and, and. It's not that it's bad because it's not. It's just. Sigh.

ETA 2: No, okay, it's not bad. It's not. I'm listening to On The Radio and yes, I still love this track. But it's gone very radio, is all. Regina Spektor used to sound like she was sat with her piano right next to my bed.

ETA 3: I'll give Spektor this: she's pretty much one of the only people I know who can sing the lyric "a little bag of cocaine" like she's talking about picking up teabags from the supermarket.

ETA the final (I promise): Apres Moi rocks. My faith is restored.

Yay!

Also, from the stuff I've heard, yes, I agree with you. She's suddenly gone more poppish and, while it isn't bad, it's not the same Regina I used to love anymore.

It may take a while because tonight I'm on the crappiest connection ever wtfyo.

I just...aie. It's good. It is good. But.

OK, let's compare the two renditions of Samson. Whilst the first one turns me into a snivelling music-ho of a wreck, the newer version is a bit too clean and lacks the emotional punch of the original. And it's not even that much different. The sound is just a little clearer and she slides through the notes a little easier and then end result is that I feel the woman that is mourning is from the Upper East Side of Manhattan, all martinis and cocktails whilst the original, I was thinking of a farmer girl sat at a dusty table in a farmhouse with a candle and an off-white apron.

Or someone shoeless. You get what I'm grabbing at (I hope).

On the Radio was fairly poptastic anyway and it's good! It is! The lyrics ping about wonderfully and love, love, love (and everyone must breathe until their dying breath) but it's not... Lacrimosa. Or Love Affair (!!!)

She made a new version of Samson? What? WHY? The first one was perfect. And yes, I totally get what you're saying.

I've only heard the live version of On the Radio so looking forward to that.

I'll say something more intelligent when I've actually heard the new stuff.

Well, the upload is slowly getting there. (Lolz. Colbert & wikipedia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmHm0rGns4I&eurl=)). Ahem, what was I saying? Oh, yeah. YEAH! Why new Samson?! Fidelity is pretty awesome, actually, in its original state and that's because that refined sound of the keyboard suits the tone of the song.

I just miss the physicality of the piano.

I own the demo version but I'll have to play it to remember it. I mean, I own 46 tracks by the woman. (Seriously. Where did I find half of this stuff? I didn't even know I had this).

HAH! "We are not evactuatin' this 'ouse!" Oh man.

I had completely forgotten I had this but I started listening to the Regina stuff I have and it popped up. (Oh, and yes, Aprés Moi is delicious. The Russian! Ooh.)

Fidelity? Is that from the new album and if so, are you saying there's a previous version?

(OMG THE RUSSIAN). !!!

I wish I could get accents and things to work on my laptop without having to resort to the character map because frankly, I'm too lazy to do that. Le sigh, yo.

Pst. Is there an echo in the album version of Aprés Moi?

Heh. I figured. I'm listening to the live version, you see, and she's... God, she's doing the echo "manually". Much love.

That's what I loved about this one. Well, as well as that perfect line in the chorus (after me comes the flood; where does she come up with this stuff? It's perfect) and all of the Russian.

I can't remember which track it is (I think it's On the Radio) but there's one where her NY accent comes through in every word. I react to that song without knowing what the hell it is. It'll come on, I'll freak out and then figure out it's Spektor.

I was thinking the same :)

Ha! Yes. It's a live version so it's difficult to make out the words but the piano play is wonderful.

SEVEN and a half hours? The fuck? You have got to be kidding me. *growls*

Indeed. Also, she sounds sort of Aretha Franklin-ish in this one. It's cool.

What, on sendspace? No way. That'll cut down quickly. It always starts off frakking with you.

Ah! Speaking of. Do you have Ooh Child? Not Nina Simone's version but Beth Orton's? I don't think you will have it but it doesn't hurt to ask.

The live version of On the Radio makes me swoon.

Yeah. Firefox is bloody lying like a dawg. It's over 70% now, but it still claims that I have three hours left. Right.

No, I don't have either.

Nah, didn't think you would. I might send you the Simone version if I can figure out where iTunes has stored the damn thing.

A phobe? Nah, not as such. I hate most of the Microsoft by-products such as Media Player because, well, I don't think they ever put much thought to them, just tried to produce something cheap and adequate. But most of the time, I'm pretty okay with Microsoft. I don't hate it, I'm just not very devoted to it; if I can find an alternative, I am more likely to start using it instead of the Microsoft product, but most of the time I don't really care.

But honestly, though? If Firefox didn't have the nifty tabs feature, I wouldn't be using it. I really don't get the fuss and hail mary going on around it. And the bleeding download feature irritates me with all its blinky blinky. You know how much I hate things that go blinky and try to get my attention on the screen. But enough about that.

*listens to Regina songs*
