Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose. [Stargate: Atlantis]

Rodney after Atlantis, after everything, and how he fell apart and how he pulled himself together.

I know that the SGA fans on my flist are mostly het shippers and fans of people who aren't Rodney McKay but I swear, if you only read one fic in this fandom, if you were forced to have one last go at it pick this one.

It's like Mr Holland's Opus and it's very long; it's wonderfully written. You spend a long time trying to figure out what happened to Atlantis, and then you find out, and then you watch repair happening and it's horrible in the sense that it's hurting prose, and it's wonderful in the sense that even if things aren't fixed, they're pieced back together. The sense that this is the way things will be, even if you don't want them to be, and that it's okay that they're this way because it makes sense. Fairytales are fantasies and Rodney never invested in those anyway.

He doesn't mind -- much -- because they wrote it into his contract that he gets one section a semester to do whatever he wants with, and also because he's earned a little bit of boring in his life, and ultimately? In a face-off between the Wraith and undergrads for "Things Rodney McKay Never Wants To Encounter Again In His Entire Life", the Wraith win, hands-down.

That extract isn't enough but it's a beginning. Really, you must read this. The best fic I've read in a long, long time.
