Oh me, oh my, I love my fandoms.
[uncut spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen S3 of CI].
Last night's L&O: CI had a guest appareance by TR Knight (George from GA) as a guy who wrote software for gamers. It was such a brilliant episode, one of the ones when Eames is on maternity. George (as I will now call him) killed a gamer who was one of his coding partner's opponents in order to get said coding partner to come back to coding; he was heavily dependent on the guy. There's this moment half way through the episode when Goren references one of the best episodes from season 2 - the one with the accountant who worked in patterns of five. He's trying to explain this to Bishop who isn't getting the connection because obviously she wans't there, and there's this frustration to Goren; it takes too much to have to keep explaining things, it's too upsetting not to have that foundation of shared knowledge and he says: "Eames would have understood." Except he's not really saying it to hurt Bishop, he's just frustrated. It was an awesome Gorenian moment. When he's confronting George, he talks about if it had been his partner who had left him and every fan in the world could recognise that anvil for what it was: Goren felt almost betrayed by Eames' absence but he collected himself and moved on; George didn't. At the very end of the episode, he gets a message from Eames that the baby has been born. So I feel good that even though I've missed this season (woe!), I still managed to catch an episode that was so fucking awesome. I love L&O for that; it's just so damn good all the time.
And I damn well love Numb3rs too. Let's just be completely shallow for a moment and list all the things that made the fangirl happy, shall we?
1) LARRY AND MEGAN! ON A DATE!
2) MEGAN BACKSTORY OMG!
3) COLBY SLAM DUNKING THAT JOCK PUNK!
4) AMITA'S VERY SHINY HAIR!
5) LARRYISMS! (Am making icons. Yes, yes).
6) DON TEASING MEGAN AND MEGAN NOT TAKING IT.
Less pleased about the lack of Papa Eppes (hee, the ending!) and the general lack of love for gamers in TV plots because it's cliched and boring. This week alone I saw the following shows dissing gamers: Bones, L&O:CI, Numb3rs. Previous shows to play out the same boring plot: NCIS, L&O and many, many others. I am not a gamer but I know a few. I knew more in secondary school. They're good guys. Dorks, dweebs, nerds, geeks - WHATEVER. But they were harmless and smart. I give my kudos to gamers.
Anyway, other things of note: the reappearance of David! And that FABULOUS directorial shot of Megan and Don on the bridge, with the building rising behind them. WOW. That was...there are no words. I loved that. And the case, other than being a boring starting point, was really well constructed and pieced together. Having seen enough crime shows in my life to understand plot twists pre-emptively, I called the third shooter and the rape before they were called on screen but when you watch crime shows as much as I do, that's not so bad. I didn't call the girl's involvement before it became apparent so I was impressed by that. It was a solid episode. No extravagances, no idiot placements. Just a really good, watchable episode of a crime show. Much love.
I recently read an article on Diane Farr in which Rob Morrow is quoted as saying that she's "as girly as hell" but that she knows her own mind and she'll stand her ground. MAN I LOVE MY FANDOMS!
Ooh, as a sidenote, Trapped (NY) aired on terrestrial yesterday and I have two things to say: I watched it on a REAL tv! And having regularly scheduled TV breaks is useful for dissipating problems with plot. I also watched NCIS. One of my favourite episodes, by far. OOH! ALSO! I SAW HUSTLE! Or at least, I saw the last 45 minutes of it. It's still such a cute show but wtf was that about putting Albie's hair in the case? HE IS A MAN. WHY WOULD HIS DNA CORRELATE? SURELY HIS MOTHER WAS, YOU KNOW, FEMALE?! These people obviously don't watch CSI. Le sigh, yo.
