I was really nervous about this episode for a multitude of reasons (not just the cast changes/additions) and I did start off watching it with quite a negative view. that being said, I came to like it. I warn you, the first half of the below is spontaneous recap; the second half is as-I-watch commentary which makes it more difficult to decipher. Oh, one thing I haven't mentioned below: yay for Ballard's facial hair!

  • New graphics – what?
  • New graphics but still that odd yellow filter. Do they not shoot this in LA?
  • Amita/Charlie – yay!
  • [1]Colby :(
    [2] Megan :)
[3] Nadine – what? I don't get her, really. I'm unsure as to whetehr I like her, dislike her because of who she is or dislike her on principle (i.e. because she is Don's contrived love interest)
  • Nadine/Don/Charlie-us Interruptus (LMAO)
  • LARRY! PAPA EPPES! BCFF*
  • New soundtrack – WTF?! (No, seriously. What is up with that soundtrack?)
  • Terry’s story – last time she spoke to her husband, they fought. The fuck?
  • Is that a new set? Or something? Is it bigger? I thought the Eppes house was on location last year?
  • OMG DON. *dies*

After this morning’s review of my fic, I wasn’t sure I was going to be open to more canon but I really, really am. I’m just happy to see them saying new lines. I liked Charlie quantifying behaviour; I loved Megan telling him that you can’t really do that.

The new camera is very shiny.

OMG driveby shooting! Oh, who the hell is writing this script?! That’s the second time we heard a line like, “Don’t move or I’ll stick a bullet in you.” THEY DON’T TALK LIKE THAT.

Also, the actual numbers bit of the show has disappeared somewhat. Um, new sets? Or just better lighting? ‘Tis quite shiny. “Timing never seemed right.” It never does with Don, does it?

Oh, I quite like Megan Reeves. Especially because they call her Megan and not MEHghan, the way the Miami crew did (when her name had no aitches in it at all). Amita looks a bit irritated by Charlie in some of their scenes. It’s quite funny. (I hope the Nadine/Don thing doesn’t get overworked; the show should remain subtle). OK, the numbers are there; they’re just squashed into five minutes and a computer programme.

OMG YAY. Dinner with The Eppes. LOVE. I love how Charlie and Papa Eppes just talk in front of Don and he just ignores them. And then they just talk OVER him. It’s hilarious. Don obviously doesn’t want to go too much into it and they’re both like attacking him. Such a family thing. And then, poor thing, he has to get all defensive. I feel kinda bad for him but this also feels like Papa and Charlie are just teasing him and he’s being The Reclusive One all over again. It’s ok when he’s giving Charlie advice about Amita but it can’t be reciprocated. The scene then gets more complicated when Papa Eppes realises it’s quite the deal for Don and tries to reason with him and Don gets MORE irritated. It’s actually funny in a not-so-funny way. The silence at the end is sad, obviously, but the whole scene is loveable (because Don Eppes is my other fandom crush like woah).

The longer I watch the show, the happier I am with it. Except for Colby who pisses me off to an irrational degree. I can ignore the new camera techniques and graphics because they come with the bigger budget but I just love watching all the rest of them on the screen. And I’m a huge Procedural Drama fan, as you all know. So, yeah. Love.

On an amusing side note (to me), Megan is played by the actress who was Maria’s mum in Roswell. She then fell for Sheriff Valenti whom I ADORE. Oh, yay for actual number stuff. I love it when Charlie’s all, “It’s like Pi,” and then Don gets geeky and sticks that photo up. AND OMG LARRY AND DON. LARRY TALKING TO DON AND DON NOT GETTING IT. OMG. Oh, shit. Please do not tell me that Larry is trying to give Don advice. OMG. Oh, this is too much for me. And Don’s face is just… oh, Larry, sweetheart, please STOP! Dude, it’s taking me half an hour to watch this scene because I keep pausing it to get over this feeling of anxious dread that is building. OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE STOP TALKING!

[uberfangirls] Dude, Rob Morrow is so very delightfully cute at the end of that scene because OMG smile! And Larry is adorable too and I don’t think I can take this much more because OMG I THINK THIS SCENE JUST KILLED ME. “That was not clear.” LOL. *dies*[/uberfangirl]

I SO HAVE PICSPAM FOR THIS. (Caps are mine; yell if you're nabbing to use for icons or whatever).

*rewatches scene* *realises that I missed two lines before* (“Why do I get the feeling you’re talking about my love life?” OMG, that line makes this scene that much more precious and CRINGE inducing).

Heh and Don totally checks his watch to see if Larry’s taking up too much of his time. *LOVES* (Btw, the end of that scene has me purely dead. *flails*)

AND NOW THERE ARE ICONS, TOO (want.take.comment.credit):

Ahem. Back to our usual scheduling, eh?

Is it me or is Morrow’s voice odd when he says “Put your hands behind your back, thumbs up!” It gets deeper or something. (OK, I’m sorry for the Morrow obsessing. I’m not normally this bad, I swear!) Ooh, Charlie and the chalkboard! My chalk obsession aside, I quite like that red pen-like chalk holder thing. That’s a cool piece of stationary. What? It is!

Oh no, it was the wife. Oh no, that’s too sad. Oh dear. *cries*

Oh dude, please do not tell me Don ‘learns’ from the Judge’s story of woe. Please, that’s so contrived! You know what irks me the most about these stories? And not just here but wherever I see it. It’s the idea that someone can’t love their job and love their life at the same time. That being dedicated and committed to the service you provide is not enough and that prioritising one over the other can make you a bad person. I just. Hmm.

Oh yay, Charlie is paying for food. Oh god, and driving too. Oh, Nadine. Put those shoulders away, bloody hell. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! “Never rule out the possibility of some kind of quantum entanglement.” HAHAHAHAHA! And Charlie’s closer: “That’s not one of mine!” LOVES. DIES. (The irony is that particular closing scene? With the three Eppes guys and Nadine? Is one I nearly wrote for the Don!fic. Except it was going to be outside a restaurant and Don waiting for his date to turn up. And she wasn’t blonde. Maybe I’d like Nadine better if she wasn’t blonde. Hmm).

Oh, I’m so much happier about this episode than I thought I was going to be. I’m a little sore about Don dating (SHUT. UP.) but I’ll get over it because I can pass over subtlety. This would be one of the few shows I actually watch more for character than I do for plot so I’m going to let it pass by. For now. But eeeeeeee! That was so good!

*rewatches final scene*

SQUEE!!!

* BCFF = Best Confused Friends Forever. Also: I need to find my new Don icon. Where is my Don icon?! Found it!
