Happy New Year, everyone. Here's to 2012.

Meme responses to questions asked by [livejournal.com profile] belantana!

01. A fight to the death: giraffes or llamas?

I think llamas would win by default. Those are some frisky buggers, whereas giraffes are sort of...serene. The llamas would just go for their knees. I suspect, like myself, giraffes would just try to run away. Like, dude, what are you-- gerroff! GERROFF MEEEEE! And then it's running with a llama impaled on its leg. That is pretty much how I see that going.

Llamas are motherfuckers.

02. One Spooks character you'd've liked to see in the finale? (You can resurrect someone if necessary.)

INTERESTING QUESTION. spoilers for S10 )

03. If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow?

I am assuming the rest of this question is would you, and where would it be? I would! And it would probably be Melbourne (because I already have plans to do NYC in 2012 \o/). There places there I have a yen to see, and people I want to see. So. Melbourne.

04. Funniest LJ-related memory?

I-- ???

Actually, no, okay, this doesn't really count, but back when we both had far too much time on our hands and were on livejournal more often, [livejournal.com profile] wliberation and I would just...spiral off into lunacy fuelled by sleeplessness. There are posts somewhere in the archive where there's, like, 100-200 comments of us just going off on one. Good times!

05. I think you post your poem-recs elsewhere to LJ now, so, rec me the latest recworthy poem you've read? If there's a tie - a poem for a rainy Sunday morning.

I have fallen out of the habit of posting here because, yes, I do post daily on tumblr. But, this one is worth posting here today. I queued this one for Thursday (which was Gujarati New Year, hurrah!) because I love Imtiaz Dharker and the mood of her poems so often fits family events. (I'm sure I've posted This Room before, which I think is the bane of GCSE students across the country, but which I adore.)

The Blessing
by Imtiaz Dharker

The skin cracks like a pod.
There never is enough water.

Imagine the drip of it,
the small splash, echo
in a tin mug,
the voice of a kindly god.

Sometimes, the sudden rush
of fortune. The municipal pipe bursts,
silver crashes to the ground
and the flow has found
a roar of tongues. From the huts,
a congregation : every man woman
child for streets around
butts in, with pots,
brass, copper, aluminium,
plastic buckets,
frantic hands,

and naked children
screaming in the liquid sun,
their highlights polished to perfection,
flashing light,
as the blessing sings
over their small bones.

In other news, this is a meme! And probably I should have posted this on my eljayversary.

delga: ([spooks] MI-5 - not 9-5.)

Oh, hey, end of the meme! I-- have been terrible at this, and had I picked a better time, my answers probably would have been more involved. I sincerely hope the rest of you do better at the attempt.

Day Twenty-Nine: Least favourite dodgy government type

Now that I now what [livejournal.com profile] hestia8 had in mind regarding this question, it is still hard, because I can only think of three government types, and they were all the HomeSec. So I am just going to pick the token centrally-sourced villain that I disliked the most and say: that fucker, Oliver Mace.

--

Day Thirty: Something you learned from watching the show

How to dismantle a bomb using a microwave; how to make someone think you are knocking at their front door whilst slipping around to the back; how to be STOIC and MISERABLE in the NAME of the QUEEN; how to clean up tea-stained documents; how not to lie to terrorists; how not to be a mole; how to conceal a weapon in the neckline of an ordinary top; how to get oneself trapped on the coast on the occasion that I need to escape after having been framed for a crime and having shot my boss; subsequently, how to make the ocean a symbol of my epic woe in the most dramatic and futile way possible. (Oh, Mr Tom Quinn. I STILL DON'T GET IT.)

delga: ([spooks] cigarettes & teacups.)

Day Twenty-Eight: How would you end the show?

One of three ways: cliffhanger where Harry probably maybe is dead; a celebration of a job well done interrupted by the next Crisis, and everyone vacating the grid for it, so that the last shot would be of the grid, empty; the 2012 bomb that sparked Code 9 goes off, despite all efforts to prevent it.

delga: ([spooks] shadow of the shadow.)

I completely forgot about this? I don't know.

--

Day Twenty-Two: Favourite Actor

Hugh Laurie's turn as Jools Siviter is my favourite male casting in this show ever. The guest casting is great for male actors - Alexander Siddig; Anupam Kher; whoever that kid was that played Ashok last year.

--

Day Twenty-Three: Favourite personal interaction between two characters

Tom coming to see Zoe in 3x01, and Zoe losing her shit over it. I also really enjoyed Ros and Jo's talk on the roof of Thames House, when Ros presents Jo with the reality of what happened in 6x10.

--

Day Twenty-Four: Favourite quote
Didn't we do this one already? Well, okay.

Lucas: Connie James? Stuff of legend.
Connie: Stuff of nightmares, possibly.

--

Day Twenty-Five: Dream guest star

ARCHIE PANJABI. I have wanted it for so long, and now she is in America being totally badass, but I still want it. Alternatively, Helen McCrory.

--

Day Twenty-Six: Favourite dodgy government type

Baby!HomeSec, although I suspect the question refers to the slew of Americans and Dolby-type idiots we keep getting.

--

Day Twenty-Seven: What would you want to see in a Spooks movie?

Lots of running and shooting and badassery, OBVIOUSLY. In seriousness, though, I would not want a Spooks movie. Ever. DON'T DO IT, BBC.

Day Twenty-One: An episode that made you cry

The closest I have come is over the season 3 finale. I remember watching 5x01 and getting really, really tense over Colin, too, but no tears. It's not really that kind of show for me.

delga: ([spooks] let it be something wonderful.)

Day Twenty: Plot that should have been developed/carried on

There are three plots/arcs that could have been better developed. Firstly, Fiona's story could have had more definition; Sosnovska's pregnancy cut her short, I know, but it wasn't all too well set up in the first place. Secondly, the Sugarhorse arc happened and then, for whatever reason, became something else and was dismissed. That had the potential to go a long way! Thirdly, 2.0 could have been so much less redundant with a bit more forethought. I loved her crazy bullshit but it didn't go anywhere in the end.

Day Nineteen: Least interesting plot?

See: Season 9; Lucas-slash-John. No-one is doing a good job of convincing me otherwise. (I will say, in relation to 9x03: the guest cast was pretty much the most excellent thing about this week.)

--

all 30 days. )

delga: ([spooks] cigarettes & teacups.)

I'm not doing so great with these, heh. Also, consider this post a place holder for talking about...things? Mostly Merlin, if I'm honest.

--

Day Seventeen: Least favourite episode

Rockstar fuckery from season 3. Yes, this is despite the whole of season 6. Jesus, that episode was godawful.

--

Day Eighteen: Most interesting plot

Interesting? I enjoyed a lot of the season 2 episodes that felt quite fresh at the time - the episode where Alexander Siddig guest starred wasn't anything new per se, but he brought something different to the guest role. I really liked the premise behind the episode where Zoe has to pretend to be a school teacher. Actually, Zoe's departure episode was well done, too.

The problem with later seasons is that they tend to feature Adam Carter, or are just plain ridiculous. UGH SPYGRAN I MISS YOU. Remember when she used to live above a labyrinthine structure in which one could potentially hold suspects? Amazing.

--

all 30 days. )

delga: ([spooks] spygran is a spy.)

Day Fifteen: Tom, Adam, Lucas: who would win in a fight?

Well, not Tom.

Whilst Adam Carter probably plays a little dirty, I think, honestly, Lucas would win.

--

Day Sixteen: favourite actress?

That is a really difficult question. I love what Norris did with Ros, but this is the show that also gave us Nicola Walker, Jenny Motherfucking Agutter, and Gemma Jones. So. Actually, probably Gemma Jones, for the scene after Harry has her house taken apart.

Day Fourteen: Favourite quote

Ros: Religion. The opium of the masses.
Zafar: Really? I thought that was football.

delga: ([spooks] MI-5 - not 9-5.)

Day Eleven: Favourite male character

Zafar was my favourite for no real discernible reason; he's the one I enjoy to write and read about. But, really, I always had a fondness for Tom, who could be so-- if I came to the show now, I probably wouldn't be so sympathetic to him. But I came to the show 9 years ago, and Mr Tom Quinn set the (fucked-as-it-is) standard.

--

Day Twelve: Least favourite male character

SHUT THE FUCK UP, ADAM FUCKING CARTER. What a cock.

--

Day Thirteen: Favourite couple

Ros/Zaf. He was really the only person who didn't hold too much malice against her at the top, and she was so fond of him. It didn't even have to go anywhere; it was just nice that they could work together and be friendly, and have no onus on it.

--

all 30 days. )

delga: ([spooks] spygran is a spy.)

Day Ten: Favourite Location

This is actually Day 6, which I apparently skipped? I don't know.

I really loved the rooftop scenes at the beginning of season 8, where Elizabeta met with Kachimov. I also enjoy any scene where two of the cast meet on a bridge over the Thames. (I am the worst at this meme; I can't remember anything.)

--

delga: ([spooks] MI-5 - not 9-5.)

Day Nine: Least favourite baddie

Who do you single out for this kind of award on a show like this? For serious, who? I hated the guys who killed Danny. I hated that sleaze in 8x03. I hated the whole of that stupid Iran plot in S6, and if I could call that a baddie then I would and be done with it. I hated those fucking rock stars in S3, because that apparently did happen. I-- who do you pick? You can't.

--

all 30 days. )

delga: ([spooks] lion-hearted girl.)

Day Eight: Favourite baddie

Is that even possible in Spooks? I guess it has to be Tessa, as Connie sort of redeems herself. And I adore Tessa, as everyone knows. Otherwise it has to be Angela Wells (Lindsay Duncan) because she is kind of amazing.

Huh. I thought my answers would be longer, but I'm so tired that I'm contemplating not even watching the episode tonight. Even though it's on in 10 minutes.

--

all 30 days. )

delga: ([spooks] let it be something wonderful.)

I knew I'd bloody forget. SIGH. I should just do the whole meme in one go.

--

Day Three: Favourite Guest Star

Hands down, Lindsay Duncan, as conspiracy madwoman Angela Wells (4x10). There really needs to be more fanfic material covering this lady, for absolute serious. I also really liked Maria Korachevsky who met with Lucas in 7x07, and - of course - Ashok from 8x07. Ashok was especially wonderful.

--

Day Four: Favourite Female Character

Rosalind Myers, of course. I remember when Fiona Carter first appeared, and I was so pleased because I loved Tessa and I loved Zoe, and they were both gone/going, and Fiona held so much promise. And then, I don't know, that all fizzled out, and we got Ros in season 5, and she was everything I had been hoping for in Fiona. Tessa is my second favourite; all the bitterness wrapped up in one body. Goddamn.

--

Day Five: Least Favourite Female Character

This is actually surprisingly difficult. I guess Juliet, because of how that worked out. I pretty much loved all the ladies.

--

Day Six: Best Exit

Danny, at the end of season 3, because he was so noble, and brave, and he knew exactly what he was doing and what it would cost him, and he did it anyway. Absolutely perfect. Here's this guy who was always sort of third-wheel, whose lost and learned so much, and he went out a hero. I loved Danny.

--

Day Seven: Worst Exit

Zafar, who was given no chances at all. Close second are Sam and Colin, and their respective send-offs - Sam's being the least dignified ever. But, yes, Zafar. Fuck.

--

delga: ([spooks] know it's me for I cannot sleep)

I am going to fall behind on this, I know I am.

--

Day two: When did you start watching?

My first episode of Spooks was-- okay I just realised that it's the same answer I gave yesterday. 1x03! I remember seeing the ads for the show and really wanting to see it, and then my friend at school mentioned the face/fryer incident and reminded me when the show was on, and I watched every episode since. I was going to say I watched every episode as it aired, but that's not right because I started uni during season 4, and it took me almost the year to catch up on that. But, yes, 1x03. And the episode after that is the Peter Salter one, and I saw that one whilst at my gran's. It must have been half term or something.

delga: ([spooks] cigarettes & teacups.)

Thirty days of Spooks! As put together by [livejournal.com profile] hestia8. Full meme can be found here.

--

Day one: Favourite Episode

My favourite episode should probably be the EERIE episode, but is actually 1x03, when Zoe gets trapped in the hotel. It's a self-contained episode, the first instance of this particularly plot playing out, and the storytelling is excellent. Between the man being led to the roof, to Tom leading the charge at the end, and Tessa's B-plot with Johnny Marks, the whole thing was so neat. I still enjoy watching this episode.
