Holy wow, guys, Only God Forgives is easily THE MOST VIOLENT FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN. And it's not like I didn't know Winding Refn's repertoire , but I was STILL shocked by some of it.

My parents left this morning to bring my sister home from uni, so that's a thing that's happening.

Other things I have seen in the past week, a list:

  1. Despicable Me 2. Baby Cousin and I watched the first one two Christmasses ago, and we loved it, so I told her we'd see the second when it came out. We bundled our way to Showcase on Saturday a week ago and, guys, I'm not even kidding, it was SO delightful. The film cracked me up, and Baby Cousin loved it too. Looking forward to buying it when it's released.

  2. The Audience. Tickets at the Gielgud had been sold out forever, so I was realy lucky to find that they were still selling tickets to the encore screening. I haven't seen The Queen but I suspect the play takes part in the same demi-fictional canon. Helen Mirren was excellent, of course, but I was surprised to see Hadyn Gwynn as Maggie Thatcher (fantastic) and loved Richard McCabe. It was oddly contemporary, and I suspect some scenes were re-written very, very recently. Some truly wonderful costume changes that made me gasp out loud, too.

  3. Private Lives. I've spent a long time thinking Private Lives was one of Pinter's but as soon as the play started up, I felt confused because it didn't sound like Pinter. That's because it's a Noel Coward play, which I should have guessed, because it felt a lot like Hay Fever. Gosh, I love Anna Chancellor. I thought Toby Stephens overplayed his hand a little but there was some truly excellent interplay between the two of them, especially when they bubble up into a rage. Chancellor leaping around the stage in her own parody of The Rites of Spring was perfectly done. I recently found out that Matthew Macfadyen did Private Lives with Kim Catrall; I wonder how it stacked up against this one.

  4. Before Midnight. I saw this before the Winding Refn screening, and I wish I'd had more time to absorb it because it was lovely and veered slightly towards the melancholy before righting itself (sort of). Celine's temper is a lot like Marion's in 2 Days in Paris but she can't be Marion. It was a film about age and love and responsibility, and what I loved about it was that it felt like a natural avenue for Celine and Jesse's relationship.

Last night I met up with my cousins for dinner. We were all falling asleep at our seats and then, as the night went on, we perked up. They're a riot, and I love them, and I needed to see them. We saw each other in the middle of May and then, because of work, I missed out on the next meet-up. There's going to be a larger gathering next weekend when we have our (almost) annual musical weekend. It's been a couple of years since the last one, so we are long overdue. After that: summer. With that in mind, I really need to get back to this Raft Race paperwork...
